Change of Scenery
    #5403641 - 03/15/06 02:05 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've been in the mortgage business for 5 years, and I love what I do. I just started a new job last week - many of you may have read about my new boss getting arrested my 3rd day on the job. Things here are extremely stressful, but not stressful in the busy-doing-a-million-things-at-once way that I'm used to. Stressful like, my boss is constantly screaming at me, and everyone else, he's constantly up my ass about every little thing, and he's constantly interrupting me while I'm trying to get work done. He's making my days miserable. I come home frazzled, and in a lousy mood because I've had to deal with his shit all day. I know how to do my job, and he knows that. He's just a wicked control freak, so instead of just LETTING me do my job, and backing off so I can do it effectively, he needs to stand over me and make inane suggestions that make no sense about the way things should be done. He's not very good at what he does, nor is he very knowledgeable about the industry. He thinks that yelling at people is going to magically make them close your loan, and it just doesn't work that way. Since I started here, he's embarrassed me in front of my colleagues, he's made me feel like an idiot, and he's tried to walk all over me by yelling in my face. This past Friday he was in my office screaming at ME about something that HE had fucked up. He told a borrower (who is in the middle of foreclosure proceedings) that he "was closing on his loan tomorrow, and would have his money soon". That was a total lie, since the borrower's application was declined everywhere we tried to send it. Also, he told the borrower not to bother paying his mortgage for this month, OR LAST, because "we would be closing him in plenty of time, so it wasn't necessary". You should NEVER, EVER tell a person not to pay their bills. So my boss was out at an appointment and the guy shows up here wanting to know "what time his closing is". My boss hadn't told me what he told the guy, and even if he had, I wouldn't have covered for his lie. I told the guy the truth, and understandably, he was furious. So my boss finds out that I told the guy the real story, and freaks out on ME for not lying to a customer.

Working here under him is really making me hate the mortgage business in general, even though it shouldn't. I decided recently that if things don't drastically improve around here in the next few days/weeks, I'm going to wait until I get my 1st paycheck and then give my notice. I can't work in an environment like this, regardless of how good the money is. I'd rather come home happy with a smaller paycheck than coming home miserable everyday, but earning a ton of cash. My boyfriend is trying his best to take my mind off of work when I get home, and I'm trying my best to leave it at the office, whatever it is that particular day that he did to piss me off, but it's hard, and I feel awful that he has had to deal with me ranting and raving when I come home after not seeing him all day. And all I want to do is go to sleep, because I"m exhausted from dealing with garbage all day.

I applied to a bunch of jobs last night, some in the mortgage industry, most not. I saw some nanny jobs that looked really interesting, I love kids, and even though the money probably wouldn't be close to as good, I'd be happy.

I wish more company owners had some decent morals and cared about the people that work hard under them. I'm a fuck of a lot more productive when I'm happy, and clearly right now I'm not. Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried talking to him, yelling back at him, reasoning with him...he yeses me to death and then doesn't change one bit. My assistant even spoke to him last night after I left, telling him that if he kept treating me the way he was that she thought i was going to quit. So he's settled down a bit today, but who knows how long that will last.

/end rant

You're definitely right about one thing: The mortgage business sucks.

Maybe a change in your path is just what you need right now?

I wish more bosses were like you seem to be in terms of ethics.  He lies to lenders, which is like, the worst possible thing to do in this business.  Our company is already blacklisted at a ton of places, they wont even do business with us anymore because of shit he has tried to pull.  Right now there are 3 loans here for 1 borrower, 3 different houses of theirs, and they my boss is trying to do all of them as owner occupied, to get the borrowers the best rate possible on ALL of their loans.  That's fraud, blatent fraud.
And he just doesn't care, at all.  :noway:

Relax, adrug. I'm just trying to show Liz how ridiculous it sounds when you try to dictate what is and isn't "Shroomery appropriate".

goobler, the thought of me being held responsible for whatever he decides to do that is illegal has certainly crossed my mind.  But, I have refused to process any loans that are fraudulent, and the other thing in my favor is that I just started, so I don't even know the story behind half of these borrowers - I can't exactly be held accountable for the mess I walked in on.

And Robot, I agree, it sucks up all of my energy

I think you should tell your boss it was his lying that messed things up. You should also tell him that you're going to do your job properly and that his controlling attitude is interfering with that. What's the worst that can happen if you're already thinking of giving your notice? Can't you report bad business practices somewhere?

Yeah, I did tell him both of those things actually, and he agrees with me and nods, and then it goes in one ear and out the other. He could care less. My fear is that if I leave on bad terms, I will never see a cent of my money. I get paid my 1st check a week from tomorrow and I'm trying to keep the peace until then. I could report him to the division of banks, and I will if things continue the way they are going right now.

Hm...that really sucks. I knew how excited you were about this job.

I have always been a brutally honest person. Most people would keep their mouths shut in a situation like this because most people have a couple of kids and bills to pay...so they can't afford to rock the boat. You have the luxury of not having to worry about that shit.

Me personally, I would go in and calmly and accurately call him on all of the shit he pulls and then say "things will change or I will quit". Be a hardass (but be polite and respectful).

Yeah, I've had a number of discussions with him telling him that his actions are making it close to impossible for me to do my job correctly.  I haven't yet threatened to quit, and I'm not going to do that until I get a paycheck from him and it clears my bank, because he IS a scumbag, and he WILL try to cheat me out of money.

The last processor (who he told me moved to Puerto Rico) he tried to fuck over in the worst way.  She was on vacation, he called her and said "we need to renegotiate your contract".  She said ok, and that they would talk when she got back.  She came back to a revised contract on her desk, he was cutting her pay in HALF.  Now legally, I'm not sure why she let him get away with this, as she had a signed employment contract...I would have taken his ass to court.  But my point is, I'm afraid he's going to do this to me.

The FIRST day I was there he went to my assistant, asked how she thought I was doing, she said excellent, and he informed her that he was cutting her hourly rate.  She said, if you do, I walk.  He backed down.  Just another instance of how he will try to fuck people over at any time, without warning, and for NO REASON.  She's excellent at what she does, was loyal to him and busted her ass while they had no full time processor there (before he hired me).  And she has a 1 yr old daughter, and he's gonna pull that shit with her?  Last pay period, she deposited her check and it BOUNCED.  I mean, fuck, how am I supposed to feel good about the long term stability of this job

Thanks for all the opinions and advice, it's much appreciated

It is rather simple. If you don't like your boss you should find a new one. Perhaps joining a B paper lender is the way to go.

I'm currently at a subprime lender, we deal with mostly BC stuff, which is a large part of the problem.  And it's not exactly "simple".  With the housing market crashing the way it has in Boston, there's barely any mortgage jobs available right now, other than sales positions, which I am not interested in.

Well, we live in a city just south of Boston, but we're lucky and our property is on 50 acres of woods surrounded by a huge stone wall.  So it feels like the country, even though it's not.

The company I work for is licensed pretty much through New England and Florida as well.  It's just that the housing market cooled down so much so fast that a lot of people aren't buying homes right now.  Home values aren't rising as fast as they were before either, so less people are refinancing.  :frown:

You have to admit sales is the way to go if you can make it through the lean times. I work in a building with a lot of lenders here. One of those little bastards is only 23 years old and is making between 80K and 110K per month before taxes. Now with the juniors under him he is working maybe 10 hours a week dealing with the stuff his juniors can't handle.

Move to California. There are a lot of lending jobs here plus the weather is nice.

I just don't like sales. I've done it, I'm good at it, and I do it for extra income on the side, but I would not want it to be my primary job. At one of my old jobs I was doing sales on the side during the refi boom and made like $85k in 1 year...I was 20. Now things are much slower though, and with bills to pay it can be stressful being on straight commission.
