True, but you can choose what books to read by which author.
So if you enjoy their message or opinions, you can choose to keep reading them.
I have no idea what I'm talking about...

As for books, I've gained a lot of knowledge from them. It all depends on what you're interested in and finding the right books...
I spend a lot of time in libraries, bookstores and especially used bookstores, you can find amazing deals at used bookstores. I'm lucky and live near 5 or 6 of them within blocks.

I wish more people were like that. I love reading for the simple sake of reading. I even re-read books that I've already read. I have read some of my favorite novels 7-8 times each (like The Lord of the Rings).
And then there's always that one person who has to walk up to me while I'm reading something and:
stranger: "What are you reading that for? School?" me: "No, just for fun." stranger: "You....read....for fun?" (utterly confused expression)

I'm an english major and I love books. For me, a book is the most efficient way of acquiring knowledge about any given subject. If you read a biography about Paul McCartney, say, you're going to know a whole lot about Paul McCartney. There's something about absorbing information in novel form that really lends itself to long term memory formation.
I always carry around a novel in my backpack, so I can keep myself occupied waiting in long lines, on the bus, etc.
If you want to get yourself stoked on chem and bio, read PIHKAL!
