selective service
    #5401562 - 03/14/06 11:14 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've been 18 for awhile now, but I still haven't signed up for selective service and a couple of weeks ago I got a reminder.

What is the deal with selective service, how long can I dodge this thing? My brothers went for awhile until they had to sign of for financial aid and I know someone else who hasn't signed up at all (been 7 years) and shit came of it.

The signups warn that it is mandatory, is it?

Its kindof bugging me, any info or advice?

The Selective Service is the federal organization responsible for maintaining a list of young males residing on US soil, which may be used by the President to draft soldiers into war.  According to [wikipedia], this applies to all males inclusive and between the ages of 18 and 26.  I registered at the time I registered to vote, only 3 more years until I'm free!

Quote:

In 1980, a person required to register who did not could face up to five years in jail or a fine up to $250,000. Despite these penalties, government records indicate that from 1980 through 1990, there were only 20 indictments [1], of which 19 were instigated in part by self publicized and self reported non-registration.  The last prosecution took place in January of 1986, after which many believed the government declined to continue prosecutions when it became apparent that the trials were themselves causing a decline in registration. As an alternative method of encouraging registration, federal legislators and most state legislators passed laws requiring that in order to receive financial aid, federal grants and loans, and certain government benefits, an individual had to be registered with selective service. Upon registering to vote, eligible citizens are automatically registered with the Selective Service.

"not being a bitch" is about the worst excuse for fighting in a war I have ever heard. Don't be a moron.

with that said, I'm signed up for selective service.

its your duty as an american citizen, u can leave whenever u want, thats the beauty of it, its a free country, and ill give my life to keep it that way, even if it means that ill die in vain for someone elses cause that i do not personally believe in. thats just the way it is. thats the way its always been, who am i to spit on all those dead soldiers graves whove valianty obeyed orders, fought and died for this country in the past.

It is a free-er country, but it is not a free country- since ww2 there hasn't been a war where defending the homeland with ones life was necessary or justifiable

not an excuse just an explanation.

no one has been drafted since viet nam, it's not likely they'll start again since they're talking about eliminating it

The main issue that will come up with any future draft is "women's right" to be drafted. I look forward to some immense hypocracy.

"its a free country" heh. I'm sure you have your points, but you've selected the wrong location to phrase it in such a way.

I have family in the military. He's there on his own terms, according to him. Either that, or he's convinced he is. Either way I'd prefer he didn't die, but no more than I prefer he doesn't kill. When he was back for a month, I never did feel comfortable asking that. If he can kill on his own terms, and he can die on his own terms then he, and a buttload of people can feel some sort of pride... but it won't be from me.

draft probably wont happen. had the draft ever started, it would have happened right when bush sent us in after the not-present bombs of mass distruction. it was also just after 9/11 and would have made it much easier to do. but now people will fight against it.
but technically speaking, as an american, you are supposed to do your service to your country, unless you leave. things dont come for free.
this being said, i hope i never, ever, ever have to go to war.

but twere i to be drafted by the usa, then yea, id go without complaining.
well, a little complaining...

If someone had attacked my country (ie WWII) I would go join up immidiatly, draft or no.

If we were ATTACKING someone without a legit cause (ie the current war in Iraq), THEN I would just say fuck it and.. Well, stay in Canada (Dual citizenship rocks).

then its not a service. the whole point of service is that you dont choose what you do. you are told and you obey.

im not sayin its right, it just what it is

(btw, with proper voting, petitioning, informing the public, etc. we could stop our government from invading other countries before the actual comand is given.)
