Ceramic heater -- overheat protection...
    #5400966 - 03/14/06 08:39 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Agar posted a strategy on using a dead frige to pasturize, incubate and fruit.  The pasturization of 160 F would be done with a ceramic heater with an adjustable thermostat.  Great idea.

I purchased the "Airworks" ceramic heater from Canadian Tire.  They added a feature called "Overheat protection" which shuts it off at 100 F.  I already screwed something into the bottom so i dont know if i can take it back.

Is there a way i can override the protection?  And will it destroy the heater if i do?

I already tried posting this in the other forum, but i didnt get any appropriate responses.. hopefully someone here can help me out?  Thanks!

It should be fairly easy to deactivate the overheat shut off circuit, but chances are if the heater is designed to shut off at 100 degrees, then it will probably not last long if you operate it at 160. It may also be difficult to regulate the temperature at all if you remove the overheat circuit; it may simply go into thermal runaway and burn up.

I'm moving this to science and tech. You will get better responses there. Good photos of the guts will be essential if you can't post a schematic.

If you cannot find a ceramic heater that does the trick.

I suggest using a "brooding" bulb, on a dimmer dial switch.

Fridge/freezer is so well insulated, it will reach & maintain 160F, without much help.

Look at hardware, Feed & Seed, or any big marts for this type bulb.
They are inexpensive.

If you DO manage to override the cutoff device, then you should probably add in an actual thermostat so you can make sure it regulates the temperature well and doesn't overheat. You could possibly just use a heating/cooling thermostat, one of the mechanical ones that uses a bimetallic strip.

I find your lack of faith disturbing
