Is rhyzo growth an important factor in spawn time?
    #5400756 - 03/14/06 07:40 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

The situation:
Ok my WBS jars were fully colonized on the outside with the fuzzy myc 3 days ago.
The next day I started seeing really heavy myc growth, I believe this is called Rhyzomorphic mycellium.

Now I'd say my jars have 15-20% of this heavy growth visible on them.

The question(s):
Can I spawn to bulk substrate now?
AND
Is their any benefit to allowing the myc to become more rhyzomorphic?

I have noticed that rhizo growth is faster than cottony growth, and no let your jars fully colonize before spawning, if they only have 15-20% then you dont have much usable spawn anyways.

If you spawn the uncolonized grain your opening up to contams.

from what ive read, rhizo pins faster and stronger than tomentose. also, the purpose of rhizo is to expand the mycelial network quickly. this way the network can gather more nutrients faster.

think of mycelium as a little army trying to take over the substrate before the germs do. they have a few tricks up their sleeves...

Just edited my post a little so it's more clear. The jars were colonized 3 days ago completely with fuzzy myc. THEN the heavy growth reared it's sexa head.

Patients. Let it go until its done. When it finishes the grain it will be hungry for you bulk substrate. Otherwise it will still have to eat the grain while trying to colonize the bulk. I think this would open the bulk to possible contamination.

Edit: Then by all mean spawn away. But I'm thinking if you let the rhyzo growth get bigger it will have better odds. Either way let us know.

Not discounting anyone but..
Any old hands out there care to inform us? Any benefit to waiting past normal spawn time and letting it go rhyzo before spawning?

Well hmm.. I guess I can wait for the answer. But I'm going to spawn and case right now. Wish me luck!

Once a jar is colonized with cotton like growth, it will often change to rhyzo growth, because it is LOOKING for more nutrients.

Rhyzo growth is like its hiking boots, for long walks.

Rhyzo form at the glass wall. Because it acts like a fence. Myc puts on its walking shoes (rhyzo growth), with the idea of climbing the fence, so it can look for new sources of nutrients.

Ah now that's what I was looking for. Thanks Agar!
I decided to be patient so I didn't already case.

Naturally, this all depends on the species too. Pan Cyans can run circles around cubensis in terms of colonization times, yet they never have rhizos.
