Martha without a coolmist working well
    #5398670 - 03/14/06 11:12 AM (18 years, 9 days ago)

I recently setup a Martha closet using only an ultrasonic on a timer, a strand of xmas lights on a timer, and a small fan also on a timer.  I have no need for a noisy, malfunctioning prone, coolmist.  The trick is to run your ultrasonic every two hours for 15 minutes.  However, for exactly tweenty minutes before your ultrasonic is set to come on, you set your small fan to engage, effectively providing the required FAE.  Of course, the new air does not have the proper RH, but after your fan finishes it's 20 min cycle, your ultrasonic kicks in to up your RH.

First i tried it without the fan, which left my Martha a soggy mess, water all over the tarp when i got home.  Second, i bought the $7 dollar fan from walmart(just a mini floor fan really) and hung it outside the martha blowing through a small hole 24/7.  This solved my water buildup issue, however, my RH was not stable at all... 60-90%.  So, to solve this, i put the fan on the timer as mentioned above.  Success!!  constant 85-90 RH all the time.  And, the air inside the martha stays fresh, which we all know pins love.  And the best part of all, ITS ALL AUTOMATED!!

You say coolmist, i say foolmist.

You'll have less water buildup by setting your timer to turn on the ultrasonic for only one or two minutes, then off for five to ten minutes. Letting it run for 15 minutes will saturate the floor as you found out. I'm sure a fan like you described will completely exchange the air in one minute, so you'd have less RH swing if you let it come on three or four times a day for only one minute. Good luck.

can anyone recommend a timer with more settings? Currently, my DT17 timer only has 14 settings per day.

Id love to have a nice 24 even timer but I can't find one thats affordable. I just use a 14 event timer and set it up to do its business once every 2.5 hours. May not be the most efficient, but if I'm going to spend over 100 on a timer.. Ill just save up a little more and by a hygrostat.

I should be able to afford one of these in a month or two. I'll post a review after I test it.
