okay, so i started this strawlog about a week and a half ago, the thing was fly, colonized wicked quick, or so i thought, and i tried initiating pinning on it about 4 -5 days ago, but havnt seen any progress, so i got curious and flipped the sucker to see this big patch on the bottom that was uncolonized, SHIT!, well, im guessing since it was the bit touching the bottom of the bin it must not have gotten enough air, or maybe excess moisture collected down there and didnt have a place to go, well anyway, i fliped it and punched a few more holes in and aroudn that spot yesterday, i dont notice any odd smells nor do i see anything bad, other than that ring of very white mycelium where it meets the uncolonized area almost as if there is a bacterial contam in that straw and its forming a barrier. oddly enough, you can see some spawn in that uncolonized area, and it hadnt for some reason hadnt colonized out like the rest, thats the part which boggles me, every jar of spawn was completely 100% colonized. well, and advice about this, maybe someone else has run into the same thing, im hopping to hear, ahh, dont worry, give it some more time it will finish up. major waste of spawn, straw, and time, if it doesnt.

If it doesn't smell I would say it's just water pooling. I agree with flipping it but I don't know if I would have poked holes over the uncolonized area.

i agree with the above post. when you do something like this the bags always have wetspots on the bottom for some reason or another.mainly just water build-up. just roll it and let colonize.

thickest log? well, its got a diameter of 7.5 inches, and length of 18 inches, it seems to be average compared to most. And yes wetspot was what i was afraid of, but man the whole rest of the thing looks great, here is a pic of the topside before flipping.

I see no wet spot on your log. It seems that people are still confusing a 'wet area' that can't colonize with bacillus. Anyway, it's important when you place the log on your shelf that you poke a few holes in the very bottom. This will allow any water that drains from gravity to escape. Don't initiate pinning with a straw log. Simply expose to light from day one, and when you see the first few pins forming under the plastic, birth at that time. It usually takes 12 to 15 days from spawning to first pins. RR

the colonisation is just all about even mixing of the spawn.
if the spawn has been mixed in evenly, there will be inoculation points all around it and therefor provide even spawn run.
if not, well then it takes some more time peace ohm

oh, i know this ohmatic, and it was mixed damn well, you can even see if you look really closely the area where the uncolonized bit is has millet spawn in it that look to be now uncolonized as well, this is what is kind of scaring me into thinking its wetspot as well. but hey if RR says nope, im going with that hopefuly even if it is the begining of some(because there is no smell), the mycelium might be able to fight back and take hold. as for a shelf, yes, there is a shelf in the other room, but its too cold right now, and the heating in the appartment sucks to high heaven, and same with the insulation, so nothing cant be grown in there atm. its sitting on the bottom of a rubbermaid bin, and it hasnt gotten any air where it contacts with the plastic. well, ill keep you all posted, along with a few other projects that are currently underway, a couple casings in the same sized bins, they are already poking through the casing and pinning has been initiated, so soon hopefuly.
