Non-Profit (Common Ground) needs spawn/supplies...
    #5398205 - 03/14/06 09:00 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all
I suppose many of you have read my thread in advanced concerning Mycoremediation in New Orleans.
The project is a phenomenal undertaking which involves all aspects of cleaning up this disaster.
My focus is on producing spawn for creating beds and bunker bags.
I'm "the Lab Guy", and I'm entrusted with the teaching of sterile techniques and the use of a pressure cooker.
I feel overwhelmed by the momentum in the the general group towards natural methods of spawn production...
There are only a few folks even somewhat knowledgable.
It's difficult to convey the importance of producing your own spawn - the sheer masses of spawn necessary for a job like this is an unwieldy concept in the heads of many heads...
Everybody wants to start cardboard piles and mix it all up with dirty ass wood chips from 6 months ago, not gonna work very well to amass enough mycelia to get anything done.
So, to make a long story short, It would be nice to be more independent of the group mind for the first few weeks and really get some spawn rollin, so that the picture emerges in a tangible way.
The concepts outlined in Mycelium Running for natural culture involve, if nothing else, TIME. We have very little of that in general.
When summer hits keeping cardboard beds alive here in new orleans is going to be a matter of collecting as many FEMA tarps as possible and vigorous water schedules - I mean the temperatures get into the 100's regularly, busting past 110F frequently in july/august.
So Time we don't have.
And i've got apprentices that would rather order 5# of spawn for $15 bones and toss it all on some cardboard than come to the lab and turn the 5# into 200#, for lack of understanding...
Anyway.
I have a point to make.

If anyone is interested in participating in any way, check out the donations page...
also check out the Home page.

If you'd like to donate supplies, in the form of wedges, plates, prints, slants, LC, or general supplies, just PM me.
I am not interested in any illegal materials or activities, and there is no profit motive in this request.

Personally, I am a professional mushroom hunter most of the year, and New Orleans has a soft spot in my heart, being a Louisianian. I will be leaving all supplies and cultures in the hands of the collective when i leave in Mid-may, and will return at the end of the summer to help get things started for the fall before i head to the PNW for the mushroom season.

So in the meantime, there is an urgency. There are lots of heavy metals here, and lots and lots of Petroleum based wastes.
People had oil tanks in their front yards and stuff.
The water that was in the little pond in my backyard was like sludge, smelling of gas and oil...
I have posted a few pics from around town at my flickr so if you didn't know, you can see that recovery is terribly slow. There is visible damage everywhere you look, and less than a tenth of the population is here... just go past the first page and the pics of the house...

Anything could be useful. THANKS IN ADVANCE.
love

I have a few thoughts on this and would like to hear what you think.
One of the major ideas that Stamets is outlining in Mycelium Running when using fungi to remediate contaminated earth. This is to look around for higher fungi already in the area (mushrooms that appear in the affected areas). This will have two benefits. If you look for a fruiting strain of mushroom living in the contaminated areas in the heat of your summer you will find species adapted both to the extremely high temps (and believe me, I'm SURE you have many), as well as having the ability to process the target contaminant. Granted it may take a month or two before temps get hot enough to allow those thermo tolerant fungi to fruit, but once they do, you can have plates in less than a month, as well as the possibility of the species allowing itself to be expanded to LC, greatly increasing the ability to spread the mycelia further (though agar to grain and grain to grain will yield more than enough spawn for your needs). Are there any fruiting mushrooms around the schools and playgrounds you're working with now? They'd be good places to start, and maybe they can be kept until next year (in culture) if it starts to get too hot...
Light and Love,
Jeremy Davis

Hi, Jeremy

Hey, just wanted to say i posted an update of sorts at my Advanced thread.

And i want to take this opportunity to stress that more than anything else i am a Mushroom Hunter...
I scour my environment for fruitbodies incessantly...it is rather debilitating at times. Driving, for instance, can be dangerous at certain times of the year.

Needless to say, if i had found some suitable fungi in my immediate environment, i would have cultured them to the best of my ability. I am actively looking.
I'm quite distressed about not being able to get out and hunt morels this spring, so try not to rub it in...

Anywayzzzz.
peace and love.
Thanks to everyone who has posted and pm'ed...

Would it be helpful to send colonized grain jars? Not that I have any at the moment, but if someone has some they don't need, would that help?
