Peroxide in the Fruiting Chamber (& Elsewhere)

Hi! I've been dumping a bit of 3% H2O2 into my perlite to keep contams down, as well as into my Cool Mist. So far, so good, but I haven't been very scientific about it, just splashing it around like cologne on a Saturday night in TJ. Is it possible to use too much? I've been told that H2O2 breaks down into water and oxygen. How rapidly does this occur? And what about adding it to my mister? Myc is pretty resistant to peroxide, correct? Should I be a little more accurate here? What kind of dilutions do ya'll recommend, (if any)?

According to the Home Mushroom Cultivation with Hydrogen Peroxide by R. Rush Wayne, the lower limit of effectiveness for 3% peroxide is a teaspoon in a quart of water. The upper limit of tolerance by mycelium is about 1/4 cup of peroxide in a quart of water. I don't have experience myself with peroxide in perlite, or a mister. But I would think you could use quite a high concentration in the perlite, since it is only evaporating into the chamber. I would suggest staying well under a 1/4 cup per quart for the mister, since it is being atomized and therefore in direct contact with the growing mycelium. Experienced users would have better info than my conjectures, of course.
Peroxide breaks down rapidly in contact with complex organic molecules, therefore the fizzing when you pour it on a wound. Heat and light also degrade it fairly quickly. That's why the grocery store peroxide comes in a dark bottle and has phosphoric acid stabilizer added. But it's stable enough to last much longer in clean perlite than an entire growing cycle. The cycle time in a 'cool' mister isn't a challenge to peroxide's stability, either.

Thanks for the good info! Sounds like I've been ok (no problems, anyway), but inquiring minds want to know the facts! BTW, have you been following Mr. Wayne's method? How has it worked for you? Could you tell us a little about it?

Does anyone have the info on how fast peroxide decomposes? Might the peroxide help with CO2 build-up (especially if an open container or peroxide was left in the fruiting chamber)or is the amount of oxygen produced by the peroxide negligible?

Thanks alot...this really helped me with my PF fruiting chamber since I knew adding h202 was good for killing off contams but I didn't know the correct proportions. Add this to the FAQ maybe?
I did all of the cookbook math and it's about 0.5% (min) to 6.25% (max) of 3% H2O2 in water, if you are correct.

I dont know whether this is true, but hydrogen Peroxide solution also reduces algae buildup in the terrarium, if your using The PmP Hydro setup, which involves Geolite. Not entirely positive on this though, as I dont fully understand what causes algae or if its even harmfull to mycelium....eh eh??

I wouldnt be using bleach at all.
I always use 1/10 h2o2 in any of my water supply(Other then what I soak/simmer with of course).
