Imagine if the act of sex was...

Painful. If climax was an extremely unpleasant experience for both parties involved.
In what ways would the world be different?
I'd imagine it would have more of a design to it, accidental families would be a thing of the past. Everything would be intentional.

It seems that pleasurable intercourse is more beneficial for simple, unenlightened organisms.
Us sophisticated beings would be better off if things were the other way around, if sex wasn't so luring. We realize the importance of reproduction, and thus don't require a material motive. The presence of one is actually disadvantageous.

Would you rather have a painful orgasm, or would you rather sweat cheese? If you had to choose that is.

Well at some point in the history of the evolution of animals, it became clear in terms of evolution that pleasurable sex is better.

If Sex was painful, we wouldn't have the overpopulation problems. We would probably not be here right now either =)
And if we weren't extinct, people would lead very uncomplicated lives, because sex (with all thoughts and urges included) usually complicates things.

if sex was painful we wouldnt be here... there would be no reproduction. thats the whole point of sex feeling so good, so that we are compelled to recreate. unless we enjoyed the pain. but then it wouldnt really be pain. it would be pleasure... and so being the same... (after a while its more philosophy of the english language rather than what we actually feel...)

If all of a sudden sex became painful, people who really wanted children would suffer through it to procreate.
If it were always painful, nobody would have started having sex in the first place.

I agree 100%, couldnt have said it better myself, this is something ive been thinking of a lot lately. Personally, I think (i stress the word I, and THINK, lol) the sex "drive" is a primitive drive that i believe is slowly fading as we become more sophisticated beings as u put it. I think the only reason its still as strong in us is because it started out as an INSTINCT, animals in the wild literally go into "auto-pilot' mode when they NEED to reproduce. I sometimes see sex as a drug actually, because some people loose the meaning of it, and its just another way to experience good fealings, which i believe makes this world FEEL a lot more real to people than it really is. Please tho, keep in mind, these are just the opinions of my own, and after quite a few i mite add

Bingo. Do you not agree that sex being pleasurable is currently counterproductive?

If the sole purpose of sex is to reproduce, then yes. But sex also helps reinforce romantic bonds, which helps the survival of the offspring. This is why women remain sexually active after menopause.

I don't think it would make too much of a difference, other than eliminating accidental births. Childbirth is already a pretty painful experience for women and yet I still see multi-child families...and what worse pain can there be for a man, than hitting him in the pocket book?
Seems to me that creating offspring is already a very painful experience for both sexes.

they do this to stop the women/girls from having before they get married. and its not necesarily that it hurts, more though that its extremely sensitive due to the clit being exposed to the world. but there are women in america and europe who get it cut off so that they can feel their clit getting rubbed by their panties, etc. sounds damn kinky and wierd, but hey...

Well, what if it was painful physically but still created that one of a kind sense of closeness and satisfaction? I think there would still be a desire for that.
