I agree with this statement 100%. Strong opinions expressed in an intelligent, coherent manner should defintely NOT be punished. I think perhaps the biggest issue lays with different moderators having different opinions on what flies and what doesn't.
The fact of the matter is that a lot of people lose thier temper. One of the biggest hinderances to open communication is anger. People get worked up and they stop listening to the other person involved and get defensive. I see this happening at times where it's not necessary to get worked up.
Straight up flaming is rude behavior and I think that's pretty much the most important rule in the Pub. If you feel the need to have a heated discussion with someone in the Pub, I think that's ok...just do it in such a manner that you don't come off as a close minded, quick tempered, fool. A discussion works two ways....listen to your opponent. You would appreciate the same respect.
I think that's really what it's all about when it comes down to it. A little bit of repect. Coming from moderators and members alike.
When I was banned in here, it was for this smiley:
I wasn't angry or serious when I posted it, yet I was still banned. Where do you stand on a banning like that?

As I recall, Learyfan said that ban was on the grounds of trolling - I'm just curious, were you warned before that, told that your behavior in the thread was trollish?

That's weak.. that's interpreting something as a personal attack, and just because someone doesn't like you, you can be banned. I think maybe (and I don't know if this doesn't already occur..) two mod's should have to agree to ban someone, or even to give them points towards a ban

Sometimes, shit gets heated, and someone needs to be banned, right there and then. And sometimes there's only one mod online. So that doesn't work.

I was not warned before that and I had never been an issue with Learyfan. Trolling is not just doing something once, it is the continual teasing and bothering of a person. I didn't even tease someone, let alone relentlessly.

According to the record, you were banned the day before that for the exact same thing, by Learyfan.

I'm talking about the first one.
I deserved the second one. I broke the rules on purpose.

Yeah, there's not a chance in hell I would complain about the second one. I knew what I was doing, and accept the consequences of it.

Who was it that got their name changed to Leary_Ban? Wasn't that screenprinter?
Hell, if somebody can get away with that... it doesn't seem right to ban someone else for use an official shroomery smiley... that's a bit too vigilant methinks.

That is most certainly a huge part of the problem. On more than one occasion I've been warned, or had a thread deleted, by one moderator while yet another has posted in it. Or got a warning/deletion over a thread that was up for well over 6 hours. That's some bullshit.
Standardization of moderation...focus on it.

I really don't know how the other mods operate all the time, but I'd like to see more time taken (in the spirit of YOU, Bom, who are so good at this) to send a warning that isn't "official" and talk it out via PM with users
Subtle modding is key. Covertly slip into posts if they begin to get heated and do some skillfull non content clearing editing. Follow with a post in the thread (and a non official pm) to drop it down a notch in a non confrontational manner (so people don't think they are being singled out in front of everyone and it turns into a pissing contest).
I think mods should strive to be as invisible as possible duty wise.

I would like to hear from the ban-happy mods, maybe they could explain why they like to "push the button" so often.
I'm curious as to why the pub needs people who are "sworn to enforce".

I don't post much anymore... my life is relatively uninteresting, so i don't usually have anything of worth to say. I usually like to give others advice.
I enjoy reading more. Its cool to read somebody's post, and be like "oh shit, i partied with that guy last summer" The veterans forum is where its at.

I'm weary of the banstick sometimes in the pub. I just post what I want and if it's out of line i'll change it rather than argue with a mod.
A ban should be for noncompliance and repetitive shit, IMO.
I like this place. I can be completely honest but at the same time I don't feel like sharing as much as others do.
