Influences of Cannabis on Hinduism
    #5396100 - 03/13/06 06:12 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

One of the earliest food crops, cannabis has maintained a place in the host of Asian cultivars since ancient times. According to several sources, Asian Subcontinental (Indian) peoples worshipping the Gods of the vedas (Hindus) used a milky tea of cannabis as a sacramental offering. The God Shiva received this offering, and, reportedly, Indra adored it as His favorite drink (Cannabis Timeline, Erowid: http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_timeline.php#Note3). The Vedas (Hindu scriptures) forbade stepping on hemp leaves or stems, and "sacred oaths were sealed over hemp. (Plants of the Gods, Schultes and Hoffman, exerpted http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_culture2.shtml)" Also, the film "Siddhartha," depicting the time of the Sakyamuni Buddha, shows Shaivite (Shiva-worshipping) sadhus (holy men) smoking hashish. Even today, you can see sadhus in nepal or India smoking hashish. Cannabis definitely had an early influence on Hindu religion, and still does to this day.

I wouldn't say it directly influenced Hinduism by itself, but it certainly was a tradition and a part of life.
