WBS Question

Is there anything I should be looking for to be in the WBS bags that I buy... like the different types of grains in the bag. And would it also work if I just added the mixture into my 1/2 pint jars and cased them once colonized like the PF tek?

For your first question, Look for millet and mino. You should not worry about trying to buy the most expensive, as these usually have chemicals that can kill mycellum. Buy the cheapo stuff. Also, I wouldn't try to make 1/2 pint jars, as the WBS itself is not nutritional enough for this size. Try at least pints, preferably quarts of WBS. Good Luck bro

WBS at Kmart is currently $4.99 for 20 lbs.
I grabbed a bag last night, high millet content. I figured I would try WBS and Rye at the same time hehe.

Mainly I look at price and weight. Most weight for the littlest price
The cheaper stuff has less sunflower seeds usually, and odds are it doesn't have fungicid added.

Agar you got me beat there, only by 2 bucks but nice find.
I would come to a total of $10 for 40lbs using the brand I get, its called...Cascade Wild Bird Food.

The cheaper stuff usually has MORE sunflower seeds. IMO Pennington's Brand Finch Seed is the primo stuff, no sunflower seeds at all, but more $$. If you want quantity for cheap, get the wild bird seed also from Penningtons. Both are sold at most Wally Worlds. Also, don't worry about the "Bird Kote" stuff it says it has on the bag. I just rinse my seeds after simmering and NEVER have had a problem with it.

Yup Fooman, that's what I have. I'm a total noob and it's got spots of myc in 84 hours, and that's after screwing up and forgetting to turn on the heater for hte first 24 hours!
Out of half a bag, I only had to remove about a cup of sunflower seeds and misc floaters.

Well I'm going to disagree. I always remove the sunflower seeds. I recently purchased a very cheap bag of WBS and found it had very few sunflower seeds in it. It had alot more fillers like cracked corn.
Sunflower seeds are the CHOICE seeds for wild birds. That and the millet. This is apparent if you have a bird feeder and look at whice seeds get kicked on the ground and whice ones don't.
So why would an expensive brand of bird seed have fewer sunflower seeds? This makes no sense.
I guess this will have to remain as a matter of opinion because I'm sure no one feels like buying bags of WBS at varying prices and removing the sunflower seeds to see which has more.
Somthing that is important tho. Is that the REALLY expensive stuff will have the hulls of the sunflower seeds removed. So they may not even be noticable in the bag.

I can't say how much other brands have but, the one pictured in Foo's post is what I have and it has very little sunflower seeds.
Now to play devil's advocate. Cheaper usually means lower standards. It is possible that one of the 'cheapness' factors is consistancy. It's possible that their will be a greater variance between bags of the cheap stuff. The 'primo' stuff would conceivably have better consistancy. I doubt the WBS companies get held accountable for lacking in consistancy in a product that is meant for wild animals. As far as the sunflower ratio: Sunflowers take birds longer to open and get the seed. So they provide a longer viewing time of birds. This is why they are desirable. When you buy 'parakeet/finch food' it is for a pet, so it is measured better and has better consistancy and QA. It doesn't have sunflowers because they make more of a mess. It also may be fortified nutritionally for your pet.
That's what I get out of it anyways.

One, the other, or 6 1/2 dozen opinions.
If you are in a quandary about it. Go with straight rye.
It is more expensive, but not all that much more. Feed store winter rye runs from $9 to $16 per 50 lb bag. Depending on where you are.
Personally, I go with a wbs/rye mix.

Sunflower seeds are cheap. You can buy large bags of pure sunflower seed for less then bags of mixed seeds. Maybe where you are it's different. Millet, nyjer, milo, thistle etc are more expensive. These are the seeds that usually go into finch seed, which is way more expensive per pound than bird seed that includes sunflower seeds. Sunflower probably is the most preferred seed of wild birds, but that doesn't mean it costs more. Birds don't pay for the seed, we do
