I did te 4% karo and it worked just fine, but it took far longer than 3-5 days before it even germinated. Much longer until it was ready for use.

Just use normal LC and give it 3-5 days to see any sign of growth not to completion and then once you see a bit then theres no stopping it from taking over the LC ... then once you inject it to substrate it nearly starts the second it hits the substrate ... i love pans so far  fingers crossed

Cooking oil? Interesting. Is there a tek I miss on this? If not, what is the reasoning behind it?

Curious.

I use 10 grams of dextrose and 10 grams of light malt powder per 500 ml (about a pint) of water. I use a stir magnet and constantly stir the mix. Pan cyans in this mix RIP through LCs like no one's business. Using about 2 ml of starter liquid culture, I get completion in no more than 3 days. Using about 1 or 2 ml of spore solution, it takes about 5 to 7 days depending on how old the spores were and the strain. These are no exaggerations!

Here is an viet pan cyan LC that was started by about 8 ml of LC in 48 hours (viets are super fast):

Here is a ausi pan cyan LC that was started from 1ml of spores after about 7 days:

Both of those cultures were proven good by subsequent fruitings.

Try doing a search for 'flocculation' with google for answers.

Oil encourages 'flocculation' of mycelial strands in a substrate like h/poo, so it stands to reason it would work well in a LC as too.

Cooking oil work fine as a very addition to a bulk substrate (tablespoon maybe in a gallon of substrate), but it should not be added to a LC. I am not sure how that worked, but as oil floats, it would effectively seal the surface layer from breathing and suffocate the LC unless you happen to be using a stir plate. Do not use oil in your LC, not even a drop.

Incidentally, if you are looking for flocculation in a bulk substrate, a better addition is gypsum. Cooking oil serves primarily as a nutritional amendment and less effectively as a flocculation agent.

I was wondering about adding gypsum and oyster shell to bulk. Wondering if it would be a waste? Maybe it would be a waste of oyster shell (have to order online to get the good stuff) but gypsum I got lots of and its easy to find..maybe I will try some if you think it helps.

I do add oil to my bulk everytime (about 1 oz per big batch).

scatmanrav, I don't think oyster shell is a good idea. I tried something like that and noticed a reduction of mycelium vigor. Maybe it wasn't the oyster shell, though.

If you are dealing with a straw-based bulk substrate, I think gypsum is very good idea since it'll help the nutritional ooze of the grains, flour, and oils stick to the straw pieces, including their hollow interiors, better. That helps the straw really serve as a better nutritional conduit for the mycelium growth. For normal manure/grain substrates, I would not bother with gypsum.
