Tinfoil or tyvek under lids, really necessary?
    #3911250 - 03/13/05 12:06 PM (19 years, 20 days ago)

I've done BRF jars PF tek and WBS jars (using polyfill) and 1/4 inch hole. I,ve done it both ways with tyvek or tin foil under lids and without and they always seem to colonize faster without the tinfoil or tyvek under lids. I know this adds an extra contam barrier but it also seems to stall the jars because of poor gas exchange. Also they seem to colonize faster and stall less with the lids inverted. Probably tyvek with no lid would work even better but I've never tried this. I,m only posting this because I recently did some BRF jars with the tinfoil under lids and they stalled 1/2 way through colonoziation and took off once I poked through the tin foil to the dry vermiculite layer clearing the 4 holes. The syringe alone apparently does not leave a big enough hole for proper gas exchange and just seems to slow things down.

I use tyvek with no lid. Works good, some people say they have problems with jars drying out but I never have. I sometimes cover them up half with ductape to prevent any drying.

Yea, you're suppose to take the lids off when using tyvek

And some people cut big holes in the lids, or lots of holes and then put the tyvek over that and then the ring and secure...Otherwise you'll get too much gas exchange and it'll probably dry out...I'd personally just cut some holes in the lid and put tyvek over it...

you can also put each jar in a bag, ziplock freezer bag and add a little moisture so it wont dry out.

That's the only time I've had problems with Tyvek. It always dried out too quick with no lid. This is IME though.

If I had a nickel... Tyvek is outdated. It was great back in the day (I'll support gentle paper tape 'til the day someone comes up with something better). MICRO-PORE TAPE $1.77/ROLL. Wal-M**T.

If I'm doing PF I don't filter with anything. The dry vermiculite is fine. If I'm doing grains I like the micropore tape.
