Question about Marijuana Addiction
    #5382634 - 03/09/06 07:08 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

They say if it is legalised that the number of addicts will skyrocket. But from listening to Dr. Drew and reading his books, he says that full blown addicts are made from child abuse and addict parents. So this means that everyone who could be an addict will be through alcohol or illegal drugs. So if weed was legalised the number of true compleatly addicted people should stay the same. Comments?

I don't think all addicts are created from child abuse and addict parents. It stems from a lot of different things. I do highly doubt that the number of addicts will sky rocket if it's legalized though. Marijuana is so prevelant and easy to get as it is, I don't think the number will change much at all. Pretty much anyone that wants to do it, can. I know it was much easier for me and all my friends when we were younger to get MJ than alcohol.

P.S. I kinda miss that show Loveline.

This is complete bullshit, Another "Correlation equals Causation".

Im sure many drug addicts come from abusive families and addict parents but this doesnt directly correlate with addiction. Addiction can happen to anyone from any background.

Nah dude, I am talking about full blown, lifelong drug addicts. And Dr. Drew is an addiction treatment doctor, he runs an addiction treatment center. He knows addicts.
And on Loveline they would do this weird thing where they would listen to a callers proablems and know what happened to them when they were yournger. They could tell sexual abuse, drug addict parents, even if a caller was a multiple orgasmer just from their voice! Its true! Loveline is a great show, its still on just without Adam Corrolla, I think I will listen tonight

Yeah but people who have the addict mind, those who had some kind of trauma, get addicted to any drug, including weed

Also those Confucios quotes are funny

lol thnx ...but yea they can get addicted to ANYTHING not just drugs some people can get addicted to sex,work,exercising...ect.ect. its all about the persons mind and if weed was legalized there probably would be a small increase in addicts but it would be legal so there would be no problem

being addicted to pot would probably be better than whatever they were addicted to before  :smirk:

Look at Amsterdam......They have pot legalized and have a low % of use. The drug war has failed on every front.

...anyway. drugs that stimulate the rewards system of the brain like "feel good" drugs have a high addiction potential for everyone. What's nice about reefer is that it's fat soluable so it takes days, weeks, even months for it to leave your body so you don't feel immediate intense withdrawal. You might get antsy within a week or two after you stop but if someone *wants* to stop, it can be pretty easy. At least easier than with drugs that leave the system faster. I think it is possable that we'll have more pot addicts than b4 if we lagalized but how would we really know? And we'd porbably still have about the same amount of overall drug addicts.

just look at other places where marijuana is legal....

or look back at the statistics when oregon legalised it. addiction did not go up. the actual amount of weed smokers did not go up. crime rates did not go up.

lets be honest, if someone wants to smoke weed. they will smoke. you think makin it legal will change how many people use it or how they use it? legalizing will just keep kids out of jail...

When was the last time you saw somebody that wanted an illegal drug not be able to find it. In other words, people that want the drug already get it and people that don't want the drug are unlikely to try it simply because it is legal. (Same way people that don't care to smoke cigarettes don't try cigarettes just because they are legal.)

it contains some similar compounds to nicotine but far less thus making quiting far easier its more of a mental addiction like "i wanna get high" then it is physical...if u dont smoke for a week then 2weeks will be very easy then a month will be easier and so on so on

The overall numbers of users would skyrocket, whether you call it an addiction or not if you smoke it everyday is a subjective discussion.

If it isn't causing any personal problems then it isn't a problem, if it is then it is. But with marijuana, if people have troubling experiences they normally stop after making numerous attempts to try to "make it work."

Marijuana's more or less decriminilised as it stands now, slap on the wrist if your unlucky enough to get caught in most places with less than 2oz, which is enough to keep a heavy user going for about a month.

I've known marijuana addicts. They develop a lot of paranoid ideas and are blind to the true cause of their paranoia.

thats kind of like saying if more hamburgers are sold, more people will be fatter.

these wonderful fascists need not look at the negatives, which stay PROPORTIONATELY THE SAME (say 5% of weed smokers are "addicts" it doesn't matter if its legalized or not, it's gonna be about the same) but they need to look at the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SAVED that can be spent on PUBLIC WELFARE PROGRAMS for DRUG ADDICTION CENTERS for those that ACTUALLY TRUELY NEED TREATMENT.

furthermore it's not about the addicts, it's about freedom. who cares if someone wants to get addicted. be there to help them through and offer them a hand. but damn well don't arrest ANYONE because they like smoking weed rather than drinking your posionous liquor and noxious cigarettes.

its a lifestyle choice and its damn well time that it starts getting the respect it deserves.

these anti-pot commercials are retarded.

this kind of rhetoric is like the nazis saying "if synagogues are legalized there will be more Jews...... " no all the Jews are already in existence they're just hiding from you.
