New Zealand Mushroom Season

Woke up this morning and for some reason wondered if any mushrooms have been growing due to the colder weather sweeping in. Looked out the window at the usual spot and noticed some Amanita Muscaria pins popping out of the grass. Took a further look out the window and saw 4 fully-grown giant Amanita's and many other pins growing.
I thought that any mushroom growth would mean the mushrooms of the Magical variety would also be growing so I went down to the local forest to go on a hunt. Searched for a few hours and found hordes and hordes of Amanitas but no psilocybes or any other species of mushrooms.
When I got home I looked at the hunting guide and it said Subaeruginosa grows only from April onwards not March.
My question is wether is should bother looking for psilocybes in the coming weeks or wait for June to come around. Looking at last years NZ/Aus hunting post people started posting around the middle of June. Is anyone here having luck finding psilocybes in the North Island at the moment?
Another question is should I bother consuming the Amanitas? I was going to take a spore print for no reason but I noticed they smell like shit so I left it alone. I hear the buzz they give isn't too great.

As far as I know, it's impossible to cultivate Amanitas inside, as they must grow near companion trees. So, a spore print probably won't do you any good, but it'll be pretty all the same

The gnomes say its possible for the actives to grow earlier, not as likely of course. Amanitas are a good sign, cold weather wood lover actives usually come a bit after them. Theyve known to come after or with stropharia aurantica. The main factors you should wait for are: 6-8 or so hours of 5 degrees (at night/early morning). Around 15-10 degrees at day, and you should go hunting a few days after a nice influx of say 60mm-80mm of rainfall in your area. These arent set in stone or metaphysical truths, but i find approximately around these occurances, they'll appear. Some people find they dont have to go to a forest either. Search woodchips, soils rich in debris and foilage, rank grasses etc. Local areas like parks and walking trails can be a good shot. To my knowledge some keen hunters in NZ were finding small patches early in April last year. Hope this helps.

the experiences i have had with dried Amanita muscaria mushrooms were very good.
i would usually eat 1/4 ounce of the dried caps, and i think they are very shroomy.
if A. muscaria grew here in my part of Florida i would harvest them often, and eat them too.

Hey MagicalKnife,
I'd first ask what part of NZ your in, the south island definitely gets liberty caps and subs popping up earlier.
As for my experience with Auckland, the start of the season fluctuates between two to four weeks from around mid April. I found a bunch of healthy subs in early April, 2004, this was definitely bought on by a cold and wet snap in late March (solid week of rain/showers, 11-15C during the day, 6-9C during the night). Last year I didn't find anything until the second of May and it was quite a dry autumn.
On average, if the temperature during the day is no higher then 15C and no higher then 9C during the night all that is needed is rain. Keep an eye out for growth of any kind, especially when it's in an open area. In my experience, I have always seen Amanitas as a good indicator that the season will be started within a month.
Once I notice more growth around town and the inner suburbs I'll head out to my universal indicator spot in the outer suburbs, It has always fruited around a week before any other patches because it's in semi dense bush and doesn't grow from mulch. I'll throw up a thread when everything looks good to go.
Good luck!

I live in the North Island. Thankyou for all your input, I think considering all the rain and the cold/frosty weather recently in my part I would say the psilocybes are very close to popping up. I have around found a few scarce various non-psilocybe gilled mushrooms popping around in different parts of the forest and the Amanitas are coming in hordes.
Are amanitas suppose to smell faintly like poo? If so, I would have a hard time downing them and I'm not too sure if it's the kind of buzz I'm looking for. From what I can tell at the moment you salivate a lot, fall asleep then have vivid dreams, but my dreams are already vivid anyway and I'd probally go insane.

A lot of people find the amanita experience unpleasant anyways. Some think it feels like more of a poisoning... Anyways it's one of those things that some people can enjoy but others don't.
