hey how long is it supposed to take a pressure cooker to get up to pressure. And is it supposed to leak any steam out of the lids edges. I got this from my mom and its an older one. it had 2 rubber gaskets with it but the lid wont go on with both of them . Ive been boiling for about 15 minutes and it put on the weight . there is steam coming out the valve where the weight goes but not enough to make it jiggle. Am i being impatient or is something wrong with my cooker. It has pressure in it like the lid is hard to turn off but i never tried to hard as i didn't want to ruin what id been doin g for the last 15 minutes.
Also if my cooker is bad can i save what I'm doing and finish it tomorrow. Ill go buy a cooker in the morning if need be. I'm preparing WBS. and i have 6 jars in the cooker and 6 more waiting to go. What do i do. I'm Inexperienced. Help me please. I dont want to start all over again if i dont have to.

Try rubbing a thin layer of vegetable oil on the rubber gasket, the instruction manual for mine suggested that, it is also supposed to extend the life of your gasket.

no, sudden loss of pressure like that can harm your jars. It can dry them out, crack the glass, break the pressure cooker, and possibly hurt you.
Just let it depressurize normally, it only takes like 15 min.

Leave the weight on for at least an hour after it stops steaming and you have removed it from the heat. Or leave it on till the jars are completely cool.
