Do these look like bell-cap panaeolus?
    #5393323 - 03/12/06 08:42 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Found a plethora of these in the horse field today. I was surprised since it has been snowing and raining. Today is, in fact, the first sunny day in a while... These were all growing in manure, and the spore print appears to be black. Any ideas?

Yep. They actually look more like P. sphinctrinus, but, same thing.

its still a great find to find these though, they were one of the first few mushrooms i discovered, and the first one ever that i fully identified by myself. they contain slight traces of seratonin, but no actives.

i would also say they are P. sphinctrinus.

either that or you could say the P. campanulatus group/complex.

Paneolus papilionaceus/campanulatus are latently active and used forever in California....ranging from dead(not active)....to surprizing at times....and alot more than seotonin has been documented in P. campanulatus....the reason for campanulatus known association with serotonin is that it was the first time that neurotransmitter was found outside of mammals, let alone a mushroom....

Panaeolus papilionaceus is active and Panaeolus campanulatus and Pn. sphinctrinus are not active and never have been, even latently.

mj.

And while serotonine is found in many mushrooms, it also is not psychoactive.
