wbs problem

I have so much problems with wbs, I soak them for 12 hour then strain them in a colander then pc.I inoculate 1 qt or 1 pint with like 2cc.Most jars stall, some colonize entirely but its like 1 work, 6 stall.I tried the soak and simmer tek, it worked 1 time and now its not working. When I try the soaking tek the jar look ok when I pull them out the pc,I inoculate them and after 2 day they look REALLY dry. They colonize a bit and surprisingly they become real wet sometime. When I open them it does not smell sour or something so that was mycelium, not contams.Someone know what might be the problem? Please dont tell me to swicht to rye, I have like 40 lbs of wbs.
Thanks

Took me 3 tries to get WBS right.
Try soaking, then simmering on LOW LOW heat with a constant stir for a long time, until when you break the grains with your fingernail, they look only a tad powdery in the very middle, but otherwise soft and wet. Load/drain for a few minutes, but add DRY VERMICULITE to the jars to soak up ANY extra moisture, until the jars don't produce any standing water when tipped around, but everything still looks wet. PC and enjoy...this was the only method that worked for me, and it worked hella-well. Where the verm sticks to the jar are always the first spots to show germination, I'll always use verm with grains.
$0.02 is your change, sir.

My jars "look" dry after a couple days, but they colonize well anyway. How long are you PC'ing and what are you using as a filter on your jars? The soak and simmer has never failed me yet.

Very good info Hypercube. WBS, IMHO, is very forgiving. I NEVER simmer. I steep the grain in very hot, diluted coffee solution until I can see a few of the millet grains exploding. I immediately pull the pot from the heat, and rinse in HOT water (Started with Doc's recommendation to use cold water, but hot removes more of the starch and the grain dries a little quicker in the strainer). I let sit for a few hours, and load into jars. PC for an hour and 15 mins @ 15 psi. Just make sure you follow the same regimen each time, and make minor adjustments to compensate for individuality, and you'll fall in love . LC > Grain > Poo -----> Holy shit, I ate too much...

Could the effects jisk is describing possibly be caused by a birdseed that's been treated with fungicide?

As long as he's soaking and rinsing well it shouldn't be a problem. I have heard that some brands just don't work though.

If I were you, I'd ask if the birdseed has fungicide on it. I guess that you can't wash it off as easily as you would think. Also, 1 and a half hours is WAY too long in the PC. I do mine for 60 minutes at 15psi and I dont ever have problems. Also, make sure you rinse REALLY well. Try Doc's WBS Tek http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/26004
And make sure you rinse for AT LEAST 3 or 4 minutes at each step. Don't try to take shortcuts, as this is probably going to make you fail.
Just my opinion though...

12 hour soak is not long enough, IMHO.
Try 24 hours.
I generally soak anywhere around 24 to 30 hours.
Just don't soak so long that the seed/grain sprout.

I had multiple failures PCing at 60 minutes. I now PC for 90 minutes and haven't had a single jar contaminate yet.

No I dont think so because some colonize entirely.Yea I'm sure my problem with the soaking method is that I only soak for 12 hours or less. Thanks for all the input.
