I need Help: problems with pinning
    #539298 - 02/03/02 03:08 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I am trying to cultivate the B+ strain using the vermiculite/rice flour method, but I have run into problems getting the cakes to pin. The first cake has been in the terranium for 9 days now with no growth. I am using a meduim sized styrofoam cooler with perlite as the method for humidification. I cut a large hole in the lid of the cooler and glued saran wrap on the inside and outside. I fan the terranium at least twice a day and give it at least one hour of light a day. The humidity level should be fine- the only problem I am having is maintaining temperature. Most of the time it is in the low 70s, so I put a ziplock bag with hot water in the terranium everyday. The temp rises to 80 for a good while. I also suspect that the light I am using may not be intense enough- I use a desk lamp with an incandescent bulb directly over the terranium, so I covered the whole lamp with a white shirt to lessen the light intensity. Other than these couple things I have no idea why they arent pinning. If anyone has any feedback whatsoever, I would be very thankful.

Well it sounds like you're letting too much humidity out. The B+ tend to do better in lower temps, around low 70's high 60's. The desklamp shouldn't be too intense for them, but a flourescent light would help them out alot more. Airing them out is good, but they need a rather high humidity to fruit. So I say that you should only air them out once a day, put a flourescent light on them for just an hour or so a day, and don't worry about the temp.. better cool than warm.
