One of the elves found these near a creek in the southeast. Could someone help with identification? Thanks.

Those are oyster mushrooms, they are choice edibles and quite tasty I might add  The latin name for them is Pleurotus ostreatus.

BTW: Your elf was looking in the right area. In the southeast creeks and river banks are about the only areas you'll find hardwoods, everywhere else is covered in those damn lanky pine trees. Oysters love fallen oaks in wet areas here in the southeast, creeks make perfect hunting grounds for oysters.

Yep, oysters definitely grow in WA. In fact, they grow almost everywhere in the entire country. They can be found on almost any type of wood, dead or not. Very abundant, these oyster mushrooms are.
I like to batter these and toss them in a Fry-Daddy. They do, although, taste alittle different than the average cultivated deep-fried Agaric that can be ordered at many small diners and drive-in restaurants.
Also, at least in my town, the average going price for a pound of oyster mushrooms is $7.99. I'd rather take a few minutes and find my own when I get the craving. There's just something about WILD that hits my tastebuds.
If you venture into any small forest looking for them, you're bound to come across a few pounds. No doubt about that.
I'd say as far as taste, these are the best next to morels, which I've yet to find in WA state. Bummer, huh?!
Stay cool and happy hunting!-Levi7.

Find a decent forest setting first. Look everywhere for fallen or dead trees, coniferous or not. Search up and down the each log thoroughly, preventing you from easily missing a nice patch. Oysters' color isn't so much of a camoflauge, but can easily be missed if you aren't paying very close attention.
You're bound to find both rotten old and very healthy looking young mushrooms. They'll look exactly like the ones pictured above. I'm sure if you look hard enough, you will find them in the area I described. They aren't really particular to the kind of wood they grow on. You can always go back to that same tree in a few weeks and pick a new batch. If the log is small enough, bring it home and keep it moist. Being in the PNW, there isn't much of a problem with that though. That little log will keep on producing for a long time! Seriously. You should try it.
Stay cool!-Levi7.

High,

Santacloset, you may also want to invest some time into reading about the oysters that look like oysters, but actually arent, oysters.

I think one of the look-a-likes is nicknamed "Angels Wings".
-Those are actually poisonous to some extent, and i have never found oyster mushrooms in florida, only angel wings.
