His book true hallucinations is my favorite by him. These days, it usually comes with the short book "invisible landscape" in the back too. Its about him, his brother Dennis, and a few friends eating mushrooms in the amazon. It is very entertaining as well as enlightening. They originally went there to seek out ayahuasca. Shrooms caught their interests though, and then they mixed the two with almost frightening results.
Im glad to see that "cosmic serpant" is on your must have list.

I really like Doors of Perception, but that's because I'm really big fan of Huxley's writing. Most people don't like any of his books.

I like "Doors of Perception," too. "Food of the Gods" is a fantastic book; A must read. I would reccomend "PiHKAL" to any hardcore drug researcher or "erowid-head," as they have been come to be known; there is no better documentation on psychedelic tryptamines and their effects anywhere.

I just finished Food of The Gods this weekend, regardless of how much McKenna hit on the head or how much he missed a bit, its still a good book, and is an excellent on drug use through all recorded history, and PERHAPS before.

and Pihkal DMT: the spirit molecule doors of perception/heaven and hell
Are all freaking amazing. Definitely add to the list: Moksha - Huxley Tihkal

I would avoid allowing any of those books to become your blue print for the psychedelic experience. Id just not read those books personally. I did however read them after the more psychedelic part of my life, and they make perfect sense. I just would suggest an uncontrived platform. After some experience read those books(I mean years worth). Honestly, alot of what the Mckenna bros write will sound kinda nutty untill you know its true yourself, and it doesnt help to look for those things after reading about it. My mind was blown after reading some of those books because I realized someone else had done the things I had and came back with their sanity intact, as I did. It takes years. Otherwise you might call it mumbojumbo or some shit, but thats what it takes to talk about the unspeakable.
By the way, the invisible landscape, as well as the archaic revival is also found in the most modern version of true hallucinations(*the book).

True about Mckenna, he doesn't really confirm anything, or offer any proof of his theories really.
But as far as Huxley and Shulgin go, no amount of experience can really give you the insight that such novels can.
Obviously, the chemistry references simply can't be duplicated. And the Shulgins' personal stories are pretty unique... but they are people in a very unique situation. Huxley does a great job of articulating things that I've felt and thought about, but could never phrase. It's pretty amazing, not simply as psychedelic insight, but simply as well done literature that captures the un-capturable (a word). Additionally, huxley's work is a good piece of history. Moksha shows some sides of the history before the psychedelic movement in the 60s, in a way that you really just can't get otherwise.
Great reads, it all depends what you want them for. If you want tripping to be explained to you, and to find out what to expect: I agree, don't bother, and don't sway your own experience with that of others. But the perspective and skill involved are wonderful reasons to pick up these books.

I agree with that fully. T Mckenna has no reason to prove that he has seen ufos yet he understands the correlation to the psychedelic experience, and he does a damn good job while trying to prove some point. Its like his whole time wave model and the I-ching.
I do beleive there are things well nit into the psychedelic experience that most people would not speak about after, even if it was a group experience. I love T Mckenna because he made an effort to stay objective as his brother tore him a new one, etc. I personally have found the shulgin's books to be the most boring of all. All the reports for one all all about emotional, vision, auditory and physical effects. I just could care less about that stuff. Ive been there, and I want to hear about science and theory beyond the synthesis of the drug its self.
