70's Dead vs 80's Dead

I dont know which year they really turned, but I really have no use for any songs ive heard from the 80s from the grateful dead. It sounds TOTALLY different from the 70s Dead, which is amazing, no offense of course!
Does anyone else notice this, or disagree?
Peace

I don't know I just compared a bootlegged (very amazing quality! Thank you Delinquentes!) '73 Show with an '85 Show, both are amazing. I guess I just love Jerry Bears voice, be it 70's,80's,90's Jerry Garcia Band, or Grateful Dead.....
Jerry could sing no wrong in my book, but then again if I am just another Deadhead without her Jerry to see and hear anymore. So I have passed as many of us have beyond the realm of rose tinted glasses, in regards to the Dead, and to Jerry its a rose tinted existence.

Its a little more then that, get deep into Dead archives and you'll find that they had many different eras, I would classify the years as so:
66-69 70-72 73-75 76-79 80-84 85-90 90-96
Their music was always evolving, just like all bands do. It's not a suprise, any band thats around for decades is going to change, just like you and I will.

My point wasn't anything to do with decades it was to say that Jerry was amazing in my book in any iteration of his music.

You sure chopped that up mighty fine. I'd put the top of the bell curve in the 70-72 "era"

It's like 70's The Who being SO much better than 80's The Who.
I think that's the case for most bands really. The 80's sucked.

As a taper and someone who saw over 100 Dead shows in his life, I will say that generally the '70s stuff is better than the '80s. But a lot of folks, myself included, saw their shows in the '80s and '90s. If I could take a time machine back to 1970 for Harper College or Fillmore East, I would. The rockingest stuff is probably 1977. But it's just another opinion. Listen to all of it, and don't let kids forget. Peace.

I like the 73 sound, as I find its the most jazzy. The 60's stuff was very bluesy, and while it was good, there was a plethora of blues soloing and jamming going on around then. I really dig the 70's sound as some songs are really pretty complicated, and they effortlessly blow through them while improv'ing the whole time.

70's dead is superior to 80's dead especially when they built up their song base after american beauty and workingmans dead. The main reason I think was because pig pen was still in the band and sang a lot of the vocals. After he died, Bobby started singing more, need I say more. Plus in the 80's they started doing more of weirs stuff which is certainly not on par with Garcia/Hunter.

85-95 i'd say the dead picked back up where they left off in, say, 77 and started playing damn good music again.

you're not moved by a good performance of Standing On The Moon?
