Selective Fungicides 1

Do these exist?
If a chemical existed that kills molds and other lower fungi while allowing basidiomycota spores to germinate, then sterile procedures would not be necessary for spore printing and making syringes.
The selective fungicide could be added to the spore solution along with antibiotics. There would still be an outside possibility of contam from other mushrooms, but the vast majority of contam problems would be forestalled.
Hmmm...

None that I know of. Most fungicides kill all spores, but allow mycelium to grow untouched. Thiophanate-methyl is approved by the FDA for use on mushroom crops and I ran some tests on it a few years ago. It's the active ingredient in Banrot 40WP. You can read up on it here. http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/reregistration/tm/tmsummary.htm RR

Indeed, for example benomyl have been used for selective isolation of basidiomycetes. The typical concentration used is 1-5 mg/l of medium, and it is often combined with an antibiotic to suppress bacterial growth.
There are other fungicides with a similar structure as benomyl (benzimidazol ring), like carbendazim, thiabendazole and more, which might work in the same way, but I have not seen their use in the literature. Other substances that have been used for selective isolation are 2-phenyl phenol, pentachlorophenol and DL-malic acid.
For two papers comparing various media, see Mycologia 83(3), 1991, pp. 296-302 and Can. J. Microbiol. 41, 1995, pp. 104-107. They both arrive at the conclusion that benomyl combined with an antibiotic works best among the compared media.
The only problem is that benomyl seems to be pretty hard to get hold of.

Benomyl indeed works. I bought a big bag of it before it was banned in the US. You need very little for mold suppression (10mg/liter). Larger amounts slow the mushroom mycelium to unacceptable levels.
