dimensions intersect, the mayan's sacred tree?
December 21st, 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count) represents an extremely close conjunction of the winter solstice sun with the crossing point of Galactic Equator and the ecliptic.

I think if enough people start believing in it, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
As of right now though, it seems to be shaping up for a fun and interesting new years eve party.

well it's all going to happen before noon on the 21st, so i don't think it'd be suited real well for a new years party

When I showed a friend of mine Terence McKenna's work on the Timewave, and how it fit very well fractally (macro and micro) in relation to cosmic, geologic, evolutionary, and modern history....well he told me that the more people that belived in it would make it happen. Like, if enough of the human collective consciousness accepted the idea it would actually happen.
We both kind of got scared...thinking how widely accepted ideas about the fundementals of our reality (we all agree matter is solid, water "wet", ect..) basically make up reality.
If we accepted the physics model presented by McKenna into our consciousness at a basal level--it would certainly be true.
Oh, and his "end date" for time is Dec. 21st, 2012 He didn't know about the Mayan calendar when he set it up like that. The "end date" on the Mayan calendar wasn't decoded untill a few years later than McKenna, and by a diffrent guy.

Only with the usage of drugs can any theory or concept suddenly make sense and become accepted as true. This, of course, doesn't mean the ideas actually make sense, or rather that they reflect reality.

Define what it is that you mean by the term "true". True, as in, we would all have deluded ourselves to accept some concept as being true, or true, as in, it actually represents reality?
Ignorance/delusion doesn't pertain to reality (forcing ourselves to accept an incorrect model of reality will assuredly set ourselves up for suffering), and if we were to accept the physics model proposed by McKenna, then we would do so by determining if it is an actual representation of reality, through tests and observation.
 Peace.

How come we all experience gravity the same way? It's part of the fabric of the collective reality. We have invented ways to ascertain and prove to ourselves why we all "agree" on certain things. Science is one of those.
Reality is just a set of agreements

And why is that? Because we are similar physical beings who experience the effects of gravity. As gravity is apparent in reality, and we experience reality, and gravity's nature is such that it effects us in a noticeable fashion, we experience it.

Invented ways? More like made observations, made conclusions, and tested those conclusions with more observations. Perception is not an invention - it is a natural result of our existance within reality. The fact that we exist within and as an aspect of reality means that other aspects of reality effect us. The fact that humans essentially have the same physical properties means that these aspects of reality effect us in the same way.

Reality is existance. Our conceptions of reality are based on observations of that existance. Reality isn't something that we make up and it thereby exists because we convince ourselves that it does.
 Peace.

I'm not exactly sure what is supposed to happen with the cosmos on that date, but I'm sure it has hapenned thousands of times already.
