I dunno really but for some reason I'm always paranoid about turning my colonizing jars sideways. I imagine bacteria getting to the cake by the vermiculite filter moving around. If you don't have to do it then don't but I can see it fucking up the dry verm filter.

the damd things dont fit standing up. i have them in there sideways now so i guess we will find out.

I don't have any experience with cakes but...

I'm sure they'll be okay. If they can colonize upside down, then they'll do alright on their side. Maybe not totally awesome (because of the lack of direct surface contact with the warm incubator bottom), but they'll do I'm sure.
