Need Advice on this Pan Trop casing...(OVERLAY??)

Hey guys, My pet rocks neighbors cockateels fish is growing some Pan Trops. He did a "casing" type setup. Bottom layer wet vermiculite, middle layer colonized rye grass seed with Pan Trop mycelium, then on top of that a layer of Dung:RyeGrass:Perlite (4:1:1). This is what he is seeing right now ---> He's wondering what he should do at this point... Case? Let it colonize more? Let it be?? Please help! -j

Let it colonize completely, then case with a very thin layer of casing soil. Peat:perlite sterilized in a pressure cooker for 45 minutes works fine. just barely cover the colonized substrate, no more then 1/4 inch, 1/8 is fine. You can add limestone to your casing soil if you want, or substitute vermiculite for the perlite. Just use whatever you normally use for cubensis casings, just use a THINNER layer. Looks good joker, colonizing nicely!!! Just let it run through all the added manure layer, before casing. After you add the casing layer, incubate it for 24 hours, then initiate immediately. Don't incubate too long, it isn't neccessary, and it will only cause overlay in sections of the casing surface. Initiate and in 5-9 days you should see pins. Keep the humidity up until they are buttons, then gradually reduce the humidity and fan more daily. Avoid hitting the mushrooms directly with water mists after they start to grow up. Keep them as dry as possible, while maintaining good casing moisture. This results in larger cap size upon maturity, and better spore production. You don't want them cracking dry until the last day or so of maturity, but you don't ever want them WET. Overly wet midway through developement causes excessive bluing and stunting. The rate of maturity is dependent on the degree of evaporation. Fastest developement from button to spore is three day, slowest is seven days.

When I get this far, I usually cover the showing mycelium with vermiculite so I can get a full colonization layer. Wouldnt that benefit? Teonan, PM me and fill me in please?

Urbanistic, Well the top layer right now, is NOT a casing layer. You may be getting confused with a casing. The top layer right now is a "bulk substrate" layer. The casing layer will be applied after the top layer has been fully colonized. The pinning wont occur until pinning is initiated. With casings, you would want to cover the peeking mycelium, however casing hasnt been applied yet. -j

some new pics i got to put up for AFOAF... Most likely there is some serious overlay... this is AFTER the poop was fully colonized and cased with a 1/8" casing layer... This is after 3 days of growth... the mycelium is unstoppable! Please advise! -j

That is beyond where you wanna be. Try casing some more, alittle thicker, and initiate immediately at slightly cooler temps. Try and bring the temperature down a bit, 75F. If you are living in a room with AC, set the temps for 75 F, and leave the lid to your terrarium open about 10%. From the looks of it, it doesn't know it is supposed to fruit. Case again with 1/4 inch casing, initiate immediately at lower temps until you see buttons. Then you can bring the temp back up to 80F. With the lid open 10%, you will need to monitor the casing moisture, don't let it not be moist. It almost looks like contamination, very aggressive stuff you got, but no color change. If you can get those to fruit, you got a winner there.

It looks like it wasn't done colonizing the substrate when you cased.

JokerGD, how did it turn out? Got some new pictures for us? It's been almost 2 weeks... I'd really love to see what happened. And what exactly did you do after those last pics. Thanks! I hope they flushed nicely for you!

Wouldnt that be considered overlay? A first time shroomer here doing casings and I would of (with all the info Ive obtained) woulda patched that first spot and waited for the rest to catch up...I dont know, I might be wrong.
