Moderate salvia use?

I've been interested in salvia for awhile now but to be honest it scares the shit out of me.
This was until one time I tried putting some extract under my tongue and just sat at a pond watching the water and thinking, it was a really nice meditative experience and I'm interested in salvia being used like this.
Earlier today I also tried to smoke a little bit casually so as not to be blasted off and although I was anxious at first that I would be once I learned to relax it was very nice again.
I guess my question is if anybody has good methods for using salvia like this and not being blasted off into salvia space because as a short acting hallucinogen it can be nice in low doses like this when you just want to relax outside and think a bit...

I had always been too overwhelmed by the smoked effects too. The few pinches of 10x in the mouth method works great for me, I prefer that much more than smoking it. Talk about anxiety horror

cool - i've thought about holding extract in my mouth before (i don't have access to fresh plant material) but have been told that it's hugely inefficient (which it probably is), but that you two still felt some effects from a few pinches is encouraging. Wysefool, what sort of quantity and what strength extract did you use? how long did it last? cheers

I was using a 15x extract if I remember correctly. The amount I used was probably around a 1/2 gram. I was trying to match it up to Erowid's recommended oral dose of regular leaf (6g). I didn't actually have a scale so I was just splitting into piles and ya, in the end I guess it was a pinch or two. It hit me pretty quickly but it was really really subtle, I would say the most of the effects lasted about 15 minutes but I felt different for an hour or two.
No hallucinations but I remember the water looking really nice and symmetrical. It was just really serene, one of those moments of clarity.

salvia tea is pretty mild and long lasting... chewing the leaves is disgusting but is stronger than tea.

Don't I know it, I tried to chew 5g or so of leaves and keep it in my mouth and even though I rinsed with mouthwash before I still got barely any effects. It was probably in the top 3 worst plants I've ever had to hold in my mouth too.
I can't wait to try more sublingual extract though.

I used to put it in a tied double teabag and then chewed it 1/3 to 2/3 gram of 10x this way still not too strong. some tequila to assist solubility helps.

If you want a nice mellow, mild-psychedelic high that will help you get used to Salvia's effects without being "shot into salvia space," you should pick up some dried leaves. These are obviously going to be less potent than your extracts.
Just grind up the leaves and roll them in a cigarette. If you smoke it casually, you can familiarize yourself with the threshold effects, and you probably won't be scared shitless or anything.
Good luck. Salvia is an interesting plant indeed.

im a noob an all, but i thought you had to use a blue flame to burn salvia to get the effects. and so wouldnt makin a cigarette out of them not work?

It worked for me. You need a torch to vaporize it if it's in a glass pipe without direct flame contact.
You can smoke it in a bowl/bong, etc with a normal lighter.

Using a torch type lighter is useful for "efficiently" smoking salvia, but is not necessary to vaporize the active components of the leaf. In other words, a very hot flame will result in getting the strongest/most concentrated/quickest assimilation of the salvia.
Smoking a cigarette, on the other hand, will deliver smaller amounts over a longer period. This can give a milder experience, making it less likely you'll be suddenly pulled back without warning.

I find it somewhat lacking in 'casual recreational' settings.
First off, lower doses tend to make my head feel internally pressurized, coupled with a sort of 'ringing' in the ears...
Alterations to motor ability are kind of fun, though...
I have several live plants, just got done taking several more cuttings. In my lifetime, I've used Salvia a grand total of like 7 times (leaves, extract)... and haven't used it for a few months.
I just like the plants, but it is definitely possible (I would say compelling) to use the plant very moderately...

I tried smoking dried salvia leaves before. Nothing at all happened. I probably smoked a quarter ounce straight through with no effects. The only way i felt anything was from smoking salvia extract. The 20x standardized knocked me on my ass.
