canadians taking prisoners

what about that, eh? canadians under american command handing over prisoners they take in afghanistan. they've already done it. but, see, it's totally bad.
the canadians aren't there as part of a united nations peace-keeping force. they're there as- basically- american soldiers. they're under the command of americans.
canada has the right to refuse to hand over prisoners if the death penalty will be sought for them. american prosecutors who want their guys back often agree not to seek the death penalty just to get them back. canada doesn't like the death penalty so we don't do that. it's simple.
now, we're handing over these prisoners from afghanistan. prisoners who may very likely be executed.
here in canada there's very little support for the death penalty. and unlike in america, we aren't willing to throw out our constitution to fight terrorism.
so
what do you thinK?

So what is the current situation. Canada is or is not handing over prisoners. I did not even know that Canada had soldiers in Afghanistan. And the prisoners they capture, are being held where? I am curious, because you are first to bring this news to my attention.

They got their prisoners and handed them
over to the Americans. Everyone here is
upset about that. The Minister of Defence
is in trouble now for misleading parliament
about it. It's bad, bad.
I agree with the person above the person above
me that it's bad. We're helping The America
violate international law, maybe. And it's
true that we aren't there as part of a UN thing.
We declined that to go get crazy with The
America.
I sometimes wish Canada could like call The
America on things. Like, "Hey, dude, you
should really straighten up that POW shit
you got going on down there. It's bad news,
man." But, we don't do that anymore.
We're spineless ice niggers. And this is just
another step is selling ourselves out to The
America. I can see us losing our currency
and the border vanishing completely.
And it's all because we're spineless ice niggers
who want to get rich off killing people like The
America.
Yeah. The prisoners thing is bad and all that.

But wouldn't having them be POWs set a poor precedence? That would give terrorist armies the same rights as armies from countries, now I hope you would agree that mercanaries don't deserve the same rights as someone fighting for hir/her country? Some of these people are essentially mercenaries. Of course some did fight for an actual government, so they probably should be granted POW status. BTW I have serious doubts that the US will be killing any of these people, esp. since they can more than likely return them to their native countries to have that done since executions are widely used in the Middle East.

I don't care what you do with them. Torture them
if you want.
But I just don't think it's good for Canada to be
declining a United Nations peacekeeping role
to give their troops to The America, to let their
troops fight under an American commander.
I'd rather my country had nothing to do with
ripping apart foreign countries except after
they're ripped apart, in a United Nations
peacekeeping role.
I don't want us to be a part of any secret
military tribunals and possible executions.
I mean, even if we handed them over to you
and you handed them over to Saudi Arabia
and they got their heads taken away, that
would still be the same thing as just letting
you kill them. It's bad news. Slippery slope
and all that.
See, we're The America's largest trade partner
so I think we should be able to tell them to find
someone else to go along on their crazy killing
people trips.
I think Canada is selling out its morality, its
ethics. I'm not sure a country can have ethics
or morality. I guess it can. The stuff in our
constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms
and all that. We're selling out all the good
stuff to The America. After the good stuff like
that goes our sovereignty. It's all bad.

yes yes yes, it's sucks.
I think I wrote something about this happening awhile back, and now it is happening, and that bothers me.
There was some guy talking on the CBC the other day. He was an old guy and it was a voiceover some footage of the war The guy was talking about Canada tarnishing it's record of peace keeping and all that stuff, but I just caught the end of it. Maybe it wasn't even on the CBC, I can't be sure anymore.
That's all I have to say about that.

You are of course allowed to your opinion, although it seems there are those in your government that don't agree with you. I do understand the slippery slope, but what is Canada then to do build jails to house extremely dangerous people with the knowledge that they will have to pay for them the rest of their life? You're already paying enough taxes aren't you? Or do you want a pay for jailing foreign soliders? While America has a great dependence on Canada as a trade partner, don't kid yourself without Canada trading with America your country would be screwed. I mean we account for about 70% of your trade, where as Canada is only about 20%(I think it's a little over this number) of US trade. Also what happens if someone does end up toppling the US, where is Canada after that? Not only would you have lost your biggest trading partner, you'd probably have a war going on that would spread beyond the borders of what used to be America.
Just an aside, I went and looked up a story about the Canadian troops, my favorite part has to be the fact that the Canadian troops were dressed in green camo, not desert. I'm sure the troops will blend in real well...
