I've noticed that there's a huge obsession with music in society. I sometimes wonder how long a typical person could go without hearing any kind of (man-made) music, and without the desire to hear it.
Every day at work there's someone who can't stand the quiet and has to have the radio on. It really pisses me off sometimes. I'll tell them to turn the volume down so that only they can hear it, but then i'm looked on as some sort of party crasher.
Have you ever noticed that every single commercial on TV has music in the background? Every one! Do we really need music to accompany everything in life? It's associated with everything to the point of being retarded. How about TV shows, commercials, movies, and video games without music? How about working without music? Or driving without music? Or parties without music? Is that even possible? Can i shop at a store without hearing music, or wait in a doctor's office without hearing music? Just once, please?
This probably sounds like a weird rant. Like, who hates music anyway? Not me, i just think it's overdone. There's just way too much of it. And when you notice this, it becomes annoying, like it has for me. Sometimes i just want to hear background noise, the sound of human speech, the soft banging of footsteps, and the rustle of clothing. When i'm driving, i like to drive with the windows down and just listen to the road noise and the roar of the engine. And i sure as hell don't want to hear music coming from someone else's car. When i go to the mall to shop, i'm there to shop, not to hear Top 40 Club Hits. When my cell phone rings, i want it to sound like a telephone ringing, and not broadcast my current favorite song that no one else gives a shit about.
I think most people would probably go crazy without hearing any music for a long period of time.... maybe that's what happened to me?

uhhh.. can't you still hear those things even when music is going?
music is everywhere because it's generally pleasant (not to mention amazing at times), and does no harm to anyone. it sets moods (why it's in commercials), and lifts spirits. it makes time seem to go faster (like at work), and provides something to concentrate on other than the thing you're currently doing. at my work, I have to peel potatoes occasionally. this is a very boring process, when trying to make enough mashed potatoes to feed a whole restaurant full of people. music passes the time. if I had to sit there and listen to the scratching of potato skins for 2 hours, I would probably go nuts.
it's a valid complaint you have, but I think you're just gonna have to accept that music is a fundamental cornerstone of humanity. I'm a musician, and I don't understand why you hate it so much I guess..

When I was in my early teens, I didn't listen to music for about one year. It just didn't interest me. I look back and I think 'How?'. These days I'm listening to music 80%+ of the day.
