alternative incubator
    #5388759 - 03/11/06 10:26 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

hey guys I tried looking everywhere, but I couldnt find the post about the heating pads... I was wondering if the heating pad should be on top or on bottom of the jars. Is this a decent cheap way to incubate jars? Thanks a lot.

I have looked for two weeks, and can only find heating pads that have an automatic shut-off feature. This would make for a terrible heater.

I would say that the heating pad should be placed below the jars, but should have a buffer zone between the two. Heat does rise, after all.

As always, one should use caution using heating pabs or anything elses designed to generate heat. Were I to use one I would do this.

From the floor up:

12x12 square of blue-board (concrete unlayment from Home Despot)
Layer of blanket
Heating pad
Layer of blanket
Incubator

PLEASE don't use a heating pad.
it never ends well, but it does have a tendency to END things alltogether.
i'm a slacker and don't use any type of an incubator- i just keep my jars/casings/whatever in igloo coolers or rubbermaid tubs in my room with the space heater on. i keep digital temp guages to monitor the inner/outer temps and i usually keep everything around 72-86 degrees, depending. works fine. of course, a TiT or a HeatBomb will give you OPTIMAL results (constant 80-84 degrees)... but it's really just a matter of speeding up your colonization time.

yeah, go with a heatbomb for small scale and tit for large scale incubation.

heat pads really are just a waste of time and money.

works a treat! Bearin mind its winter hereand reallllll cold yes  the habistat unit is excellent but pricy, i picked mine up and 2 haetmats second hand for about $25.sorted:)

a heating pad is a fire hazard,
they are not meant to operate for hours on end
and neither should one place ANY weight on top
nor wrap them in flammable materials.
make ohmatic's heatbomb,
much safer

Alright thats a bunch of crap, not suppose to run hours on end. Thats what their for, I have two for a snake enclosrue and their on all day all night, no problems. they dont use enough electrical output to start a fire, and they are not hot enough to cause one. If used properly, such as having a cavity between it and what ever its heating it is quite handy. you can even place a towel to muffle the heat so it doesnt get too hot. IMO they are for the poor man grower, people who cant afford alot for htier grow..........anyhoo, happy shrooming!...

I have a TiT and live in a cold environment. I have it wrapped in several sleeping bags and blankets. I have to heat the 'building' to 71 degrees so that my TiT gets to temperature.

My mistake #1: I'm using too small of an aquarium heater(25w).

My mistake #2: Standard plastic totes are not insulated.

My mistake #3: They're HUGE. Like 50 Gallon totes.

After I have my current jars out of there, I'm changing to a TiC.
Which is an acronym for Tub in Cooler. It just makes more sense to use an insulated outer container for me in this arctic bullshit.

Anyways, I hope that helps you when you decide what you are going to use.

thanks a lot for the input guys. I have decided to use a heating pad I have laying around, and just put it in a cooler with some blankets etc. and a thermometer. I just wanna try out growing and not really get into anything serious I only have 6 jars so its nothing big. I do have a small fish tank heater, but no tubs to put it in so I may look into building a heat bomb. I don't have my license although over legal age so I never get trips to go to home depot and what not. Thanks again!

I use a heating blanket with a couple books on top to create a space above the blanket. I adjusted the space until I found 82 degrees on my digital therm. Works just fine. Right now it's on the low setting and by bulk is about 2 inches from the top of the blanket.
