method was a mason jar with rye (just rye). It was put down onto a jar lid (with virmiculite on the botom, and some on the top like a casing layer). Well mushrooms are groing out of the side's (very botom). They are however growing VERY VERY slow. THey are growing however, each day they get a littttle bit bigger. Can this be normaly with a rye cake or is there something that needs to be changed?

How often are you fanning and what RH level are you keeping them at? If they don't get the water that they demand and believe me they require very moist conditions they will be inhibited and could stall (stop growing). The reason they are growing out from the bottom is you guessed it more water available! See it's that easy. I hope your misting them also. GL and welcome!

Mix in some 3% hydrogen peroxide to your misting water at a ratio of one part peroxide to 9 parts water and it will prevent contamination from misting.

Use distilled water right out of the jug it's "clean". H2O2 water can hurt developing primordia FYI. Read up on water delivery as improper water delivery can do more harm than good.

Your kidding right? Buy the distilled water from a store or boil your own (rapid boil 5min. minimum) H2O2 does retard myc growth somewhat even at low concentrations, ok rinse your mouth with 3% then realize how fragile the mycelium network actually is and it will become totally clear. Now myc rebounds quickly mind you but primordia does not remember that. Using H2O2 in a spray bottle is no problem if you let it sit overnight as the chemical reaction will have already occurred and you will be left with only clean oxygenated water. Contams in an hour! LOL your funny!!!! Thanks I needed that! 5 shrooms for making me laugh outloud!!!!

BTW when lightly misting spray above the cakes and let the mist fall onto the cakes. What color exactly did it turn?
