I?ve lost countless hours and hope with contam and I guess it comes down to the last step
Step 1 (no problems)
Using EQ on rye ? colonizes Fine
Step 2 (no problems)
Colonized Rye to Cow Dung (pasteurize the dung in the oven 2 hours at 175oF Case and cover with tin foil.
Two weeks later fully colonized not signs of contam
Step 3 (problems)
Using Coir with Verm wet and pasteurized at 175oF for 2 hours, area sterilized and cases are covered with 1? casing layer of this substance, covered with new foil then set for maturing
Step 4 (in garbage)
Uncovered the project completely green 1 out of 4 survived 3 in the garbage this is the third time this has happened.
I think I?m not going to put a casing layer on it, as this has been endless frustration, all my techniques are equal yet most get contaminated while one may survive, I?m thinking about skipping step 3 and going strait into the incubator. Anyone have any advice?
Thanks

Try a straight verm layer, or a 50/50+ mix with verm and peat moss. (the + is some ground oyster shell or even chicken egg shells for PH balance)
The problem is, coir is nutritious... not terribly so, but moreso than verm and peat moss.
Other than that, I don't know what could be going wrong.
If you aren't going to put a casing layer on, you're probably better off making cakes, because casings without a casing layer tend to fruit poorly.

casing layer was too thick and poke hole for gas exchange in the tin foil when you cover up for spawn run... contams like trichoderma (aka green mold) love stail air

I agree with the above posts. Coir sucks IMO as a casing layer and I've actually been using it to spawn my grains to rather then casing with it - EXAMPLE.

If you are getting a bulk substrate COMPLETELY COLONIZED uncontaminated. (as you state)
The problem must occur with the casing mix cover and/or when adding it.
Something isn't right, at that step.
I would suggest you nuke the hydrated casing mix in a plastic bag.
Do it like for 3.33 minutes, flip it over & let it rest 2 minutes, the repeat same thing twice more. Then, use a rubber band to seal the HOT bag TIGHT & let it cool overnight. (hot bags require oven mitts to handle)
Before adding the casing mix, go over your sanitary procedures & close/cure any/all holes you can think of.

Coir doesn't suck as a casing layer...
60/40 or 70/30 used properly will work really good.
the problems that most people have is that they either use too much Coir...
or they let the casing layer colonize too much...
or they get their casing layer too wet.

Did you remember to poke holes in your tin foil?

Thats my problem must be! No holes in the foil ( I always think holes is where the contams leak in from) and my casing is far too much coir using about (wet) 85/15 coir to verm.
I'll poke some holes on the one now.
