Al-Qaida in Iraq vows to attack White House, Vatican if al-Zarqawi so orders

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Followers of "Al-Qaida in Iraq" leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi would attack the White House or the Vatican if their leader chose to target those sites, the group's deputy chief said in an Internet statement posted Monday.

The written statement, signed in the name of the group's purported deputy, Abu Abdel-Rahman al-Iraqi, also threatened to attack Iraqi security forces and officials, including incoming Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

"We are after you as long as we are alive," said the statement in relation to Shiite leader al-Jaafari. The authenticity of the statement, which appeared on an Internet site known for carrying extremist Islamic material, could not be immediately verified.

The statement appeared to be the first attributed to al-Iraqi, whose name has not previously surfaced as terror chief al-Zarqawi's deputy.

"We have taken our decision, depending on God, to fight the infidels, the hypocrites and the villains," the statement said. "Even if you (al-Zarqawi) take us to the White House and the bastion of the Vatican, we will stick close to you until you achieve your aim."

Al-Iraqi vowed to fight Iraqi police and national guard units, whom he described as "the tail of the Crusaders . . . the paws of the Americans and the evil Rafidah (Shiites) and we will show no mercy toward you."

Al-Zarqawi's group, believed to be comprised mainly of Sunni Muslims, has claimed responsibility for most of the deadliest insurgent attacks on U.S. troops, local security forces and government officials.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

Why bother attacking the Vatican? The Europeans are the least of their worries, and doing that might actually piss them off enough to pass a UN resolution or two.

To perpetuatuate idealogical warfare, and to further disenfranchise Muslim belief as a whole through the media's portrayal of its adherents.

 My thoughts on it... it'll make it more publicly acceptable to "counter-terrorism" and will further cast doubt on Muslim belief, as a faction is bringing on religious warfare.

Isnt Al Qaida connected to the vatican in some way? Or have I just mistaken politicians for terrorists?

Do what Russia did. Bomb the vatican and blame it on the Muslims. I am Russian and I am fairly certain that the FSB or whoever bombed the apartment building which led to the second Chechen war. Or we could piss them off so that they will bomb the Vatican themselves and then the whole WEST can pulvorize the Muslim lands, again.

maybe i misinterpreted that, but i thought that they were just saying that they would if ordered attack somewhere as locked down as the white house, or as holy as the vatican. not that they were going to, but they trust their superiors in their final judgements enough to follow through with an attack no matter what the destination.

i wish i knew more about this stuff, and not what fox news tells me.

What is it about the Vatican that he doesn't like?  It isn't because they are Christians is it?  Say it isn't true!

Hey, at least we know that it hasn't come true (yet). Didn't even notice that until you mentioned it.

The Vatican, in 1095, first called upon Roman Catholics to invade Jersulam and recapture the "Holy Land". This, of course, was the first Crusade. In the Council of Clermont, the Pope stated:

"Let those who have been accustomed unjustly to wage private warfare against the faithful now go against the infidels and end with victory this war which should have been begun long ago. Let those who for a long time, have been robbers, now become knights. Let those who have been fighting against their brothers and relatives now fight in a proper way against the barbarians. Let those who have been serving as mercenaries for small pay now obtain the eternal reward. Let those who have been wearing themselves out in both body and soul now work for a double honor."

There is a reason why that sounds like text out of the al-Qaeda handbook. The Pope also promised Christians who died in battle to be rewarded with absolution of sins.

It's just unfortunate that 1,000 years later, those ideas are still intact. While it seems ridiculous for us to still blame the Catholic Church for that, people do not forget the past when it was so brutal.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.
