Sharing Color
    #5383702 - 03/09/06 11:35 PM (18 years, 13 days ago)

Lately, I've been fascinated with color harmonies. I haven't posted here in a long while, and figured I would throw down some of the work I've done in the last week or so. It would be awesome to see others put things in this thread as well...anything that you think exhibits great colors... This can be an inspiration thread of sorts, if people are into it.

Hopefully that will get this party started!

Just surreal... Chunder man, I've missed you around here!

Each one made my jaw drop even more.

It's modern digital impressionism. I love it!
I'll look around for something in this vein but damn, it'll be tough to follow those.

Blastrid! I've been pretty busy the last year or so, haven't had too much time to post, but hopefully that is changing. I'm definitely influenced by the impressionists...to me its just about the only way I can paint things. I have no interest in meticulously rendering something to look realistic - cameras can do that better than I could ever hope. I'm interested in the human response to imagery, the chaotic, fractal, messy, intuitive construction of forms and color...
Thanks for the warm words brother.

TheCow, I'm glad these excretions of mine have pleased you in some way!

stefan, eligal, these were all done with Photoshop CS. I do use watercolor paints from time to time, but you can't beat the flexibility and speed of a computer! Glad you like them.

I try to paint at least a few quick sketches each day, so I'll try to keep updating this thread. In the meantime here are some sattelite photographs of rainforests that are quite beautiful... I feel that this boundless beauty found in nature's compositions can be accessed by everyone in different ways, its just a matter of opening oneself to the message. So often, we cannot see past the square rooms and straight roads and right angles of the houses and cities we live in. To my mind the most satisfying beauty arises from the interconnected fractals and color harmonies found in nature - from the cosmic vistas above us to the to the forest rivers winding to the blood vessel and organ systems within us.

Ahh, rambling about art! It is great!

Onward!

Nice, man. I like the first one a lot... and then the one with the two guys wandering through the brush. There's something very appealing about the balance you get out of that red and that blue...

Then, a few down from there (the one right before the bearded fellow) the composition of that sky is just phenomenal!

It is great to see what you've been working on, man... very inspirational!

Don't be a stranger...

Jacques, thank you for the comments. I'm glad you noticed the balance of those two figures...its something I'v been thinking a lot about - how to create balance with color proportions. Subtle ratios of complementary colors is the key, again nature is the teacher - delicately tinted yellow-orange clouds against a deep blue sky, small brilliant notes of deep red on the dark green holly bush, piercing yellow light of stars against the infinite violet of a night sky. The eye craves a balance of color and nature provides it, every moment of the day presents new color schemes to learn from....

Here are few more quick ones I just did:

fung_us_among_us, glad you like some of them. I paint these with a 4x5 wacom graphire tablet. One of these days I'll get a bigger tablet and I'll finally be able to get some big fat expressive marks going - as it is this tiny tablet limits what kind and how fast I can make marks.

jonnywax, your love is much appreciated. I produce these primarily out of a need to express the colors and forms I have inside me, but a large part of the existence of a piece of art is inciting feelings inside others - and I am humbled and honored to be a part of that - thank you. I am indeed residing in the beautiful state of washington...I love the skies here, even the grayest days are sublime!

Still busy for the forseeable future, but here are a couple quickies I made today:

"Nature contains the elements, in colour and form, of all pictures, as the keyboard contains the notes of all music. But the artist is born to pick and choose... that the result may be beautiful ? as the musician gathers his notes, and forms his chords, until he brings forth from chaos glorious harmony... " -James Abbot McNeill Whistler

Your work certainly does have a very Washingtonesque feel to it. It reminds me of looking out towards the Olympics here in Seattle (when I can actually see them).

Keep it up.

Also, if you would, I'd love to see your take on the middle of the ocean.

jonnywax, I love those cold mountains. Someday I'll go live there. Here in the next week or two I'll do some ocean themed paintings - its a very important subject to me so I'll have to give it some thought. I'm honored that you are displaying some of this stuff - you're probably the first person to print my stuff off and hang it up (besides my grandma, hah!)

Jacques, I am indeed using Photoshop for all these, except that painting of an aardvark with red lines coming out of his back - which I painted mostly in photoshop but laid in that thick looking paint stuff in Painter XI. Hit me up anytime, we'll talk about Photoshop. I will tell you that mostly I get these textural effects by making custom brushes and messing around with their properites. Sometimes discovering a new brush I like will spawn a few paintings in and of itself.

Blastrid, I do not have a portfolio site as of yet (I'm working on it, I'm hoping that maybe I'll be able to find some kind of job related to this stuff...) However I've been posting most of the stuff you see here up on http://thechunder.googlepages.com the last couple weeks. In the future I'll get a site up with my drawings and stuff as well.

All of these pictures were painted actual size. I don't like to zoom in on the painting and paint just small areas - for some reason I have to see the whole thing all at once, so I tend to paint these things at a small resolution so I'm not even tempted to zoom in. That and my monitor is tiny. But I guess its better to have higher resolution pictures - more useful to others.

Here is another quick one, done in 1024x768:

absolutely stunning work ... i can't wait to get my own wacom ... (which won't be until i buy myself a LEGIT version of the entire adobe suite)

i've been using cracks since i first started using PS years ago, and it'd feel real good to finally give em what they deserve ...

and again, wonderful use of color and experimental flow ... it seems that the farther away you get from yourself in art (or anything in life ...), the closer you'll end up being in the end

HB, I'd reccommend getting the biggest Wacom you can afford, and definitely get one of the Intuos line. You will not regret it at all.

It's so worth it to experiment with your skill....for me, its aobut finding a balance between refining what I already know and pushing myself into territory I'm not familiar with and forcing myself to struggle with new information and ideas. I fear stagnation deeply, and I'm always trying (sometimes in vain) to seek out new modes of creating/expressing. It's like how a plant will only grow so large in a certain sized pot, and only when its roots can escape the confines of the pot can it begin to reach its full potential.

David_vs_Goliath, I'm happy my meanderings have brought you some pleasure and inspiration. Onward, into art!

I'm intrigued with simple shapes lately...

I'm also fascinated by forms that seem to be writing of some kind, but are actually meaningless forms. The thought of these things gets me extremely excited, I'm going to explore them more in the future...

peace_n_love, I'm happy to be of service!

Syle, check out www.wacom.com for an overview of their tablets. Again I'd recommend buying the most expensive Intuous tablet you can afford, they are worth every cent.

Okay, so after looking through your work I want to know if buying a wacom intuos 6x8 tablet with pen and mouse is worth it. I want to work on my drawing in photoshop but the mouse is just not working for me. And my student store quoted $329.98 for it, do you know if I can get it anywhere cheaper? I did a search but I couldn't find anything.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.

sadsappysucker, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a tablet to do digital artwork. A mouse is a sad and archaic input device, and the sooner it fades away the better. That Intuos3 6x8 is a fine tablet, and you can usually find them cheaper on ebay. Here is a new one for US $262.88: http://cgi.ebay.com/WACOM-Intuos3-6x8-US...1QQcmdZViewItem

Every dollar you invest in a tablet will be paid back a hundred fold and more if you're serious about doing digital art. I'm currently saving up to get a wacom cintiq, which is a huge monitor that you can draw directly on - but it will be a while, those bitches are expensive. It might take a while to get used to using the tablet - it is a weird sensation drawing off to the side adn seeing your marks appear on the screen. But if you keep at it and practice, eventually it will feel like you are causing the marks to just appear spontaneously with your mind, you will forget you are even using your hand. It is a very cool sensation. Good luck in your search, and have confidence that a tablet is ultimately an extremely powerful tool and will serve you for as long and as far as you want to go.

DRTMaverick, glad you dig it, I will certainly be bringing some more art to this thread in the near future!

mickdawg666, I too <3 Shroomery. Long live the Shroomery and its denizens!

Heres something I made quickly with my mouse.

It is quite enjoyable being so free about art, as I am usually much more maticulous and precise. I enjoyed this though it didn't turn out very well. It took only a couple of minutes, and I will certainly experiment further into the style, but with a little more thought in the future.

notleaft - INDEED! : )

Thanks Syle. If you like that you should love the painting it was inspired by: http://www.artchive.com/artchive/I/inness/inness_early_autumn.jpg.html

George Inness is one of my favorite landscape painters, he manages to capture something that very few artists ever do. My pale imitation of him was sincere, but as you can see his original work carries an incredible weight.

One more on this grey day:

i'm honored to have a little bit to do with your avatar, as you could've clearly made something a thousand times more beautiful.

god damn dude. god damn. your stuff really amazes me.

I'll tell you quite quickly how to start making money from your art. Sell it!

make a website, offer your pieces as prints/posters. just like www.iso50.com that i told you about. cmon dude, I know at least a dozen people from The Shroomery would buy one.

Hell i'd buy 3.

you have serious talent... i'm really impressed and i'm not done looking yet

the one at like page 2 w/ the person by the fire i really liked, too.. and almost all the rest..

I have a free program for my mac called ArtRage that allows you to 'paint' like that.. i'm not much of an artist, though, so i just doodle on it.

Blastrid, thanks again brother. I'm hoping to experiment with selling prints in the future...who knows..

Yoschie99, ArtRage is fun! I like how simple and intuitive the interface is. Have you ever tried Painter? It's a lot like ArtRage, but it simulates more materials - good times.

HB, I'm loving that summer night. I like all the subtle movement of color in the background and the delicate balance of the line-structure - like a spindly bridge erected in this field of intense heat. Spirits crossing the bridge. The piece brings a lot of vision to my head, thanks for sharing it!
