I ran out of vermiculite and my LC wbs jars were far done colonizing so I made a casing of straight coir. Wil this work or am I screwed?

From what I understand, using straight coir is an invitation for overlay. It will still work, but it's not optimal.

Yes, using straight coir will colonize like a brick before it pins. You'll get mushrooms, but not as many as you would with a real casing.

The reality is.
Adding straight coir is like adding a thin layer of new substrate.
Which Myc will tightly colonize 100%.
Which means, no effective / functional casing layer exists.

If I ran out and got some verm today and made another casing layer to put on top of that would it work out a little better?

i guess it would be like adding a 100% vermiculite casing layer.

Makes sense, but I was surprised by these results: http://tinyurl.com/nl2ce
Where doc34 says he used wbs with straight coir casing layers. I guess there could be more mushrooms there, but it makes me wonder about using just coir for simplicity's sake.

jmg5, that is a great example of why cubensis doesn't even need a casing. Have you seen PF cakes packed with mushrooms before? I have. Cubensis likes a casing and is more likely to give you great pin sets with one than without, especially with later flushes, but it is not required. Too many people forget that cubes do great without a casing, so you don't need to use one. That's why I said he'll do okay, but probably not as well as with a casing.
