I have 2 24" 40 watt fluorescent lights in a 4x4 enlosed grow box. I was wondering if anyone could tell me why my lights are getting so hot.i have a fan in the box but they still heat the grow box up. i used fluros in the past and they never got this hot ever. the light fixtures were really cheap so this could be a reason, but the lights in the fixtures are GE fluros for plant growth.

The control gear (ballast/starter) will be making the heat, not the lamps. I use two 50w compact fluros for veg and they make a bit of heat, nothing like HPS but still enough warmth to be noticeable.

Something is wrong with your light then, bad ballest, wrong light bulb, wired incorectly or somthing else. is it a T12 T8 T5?
Is the fan you have ventalating your space or just moving air around the inside of the box?
Iv never seen a 24" 40w fixture.. just seems strang to me.

there shouldn't be much heat. My T12's have been on for a month straight 24/7 and there is a very small amount of heat comming from them. Cheapness in the ballist doesn't matter? they're all around 7-12 bucks usually. (T-12s) maybe some faulty producT? I'd buy new ones before any possible fire could start.

I too have never heard of a 40 watt 24" tube. Standard 40 watt tubes are 48".
Compact fluros put off some heat, enough to burn a finger. Sounds like you may have compact fluros; an exhaust fan may be in order.

actually they are T12 20 watt fluros i was looking at the wrong number.
the fluros they came with were cheap and only an inch in diameter. i bought new fluros that are about 1.5 to 2 inches in diamer T12 20w they fit in the fixture fine but it still gets hot. i have a fan running inside the box and i leave the doors open when i can to help circulate the air more that helps bring down the temperature a little bit. the temperature has been around 85 to 90 degrees for a few days in my growbox with the fan on but the plants dont show any wilting or stress from the heat
