Temperatures and Humidities
    #538226 - 02/02/02 12:05 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Fellow experienced shroomers,

Once again I implore your knowledge. I am a greenhorn newbie whohas a couple clarifications I need made.

1.) The incubator is only used for growing the mycellium in the jars. The heat should be somewhere between 82-86 degrees and humidity is not necessary. True or False?

2.) THe terrarium is where you put colonized substrate cakes and the humidity must be around 95%. Temps around 70-75 degrees. COndensation should be monitered and air should be changed periodically. True or False?

3.) Finally, what is the difference between casings and cakes?

If any of these questions seem stupid and annoy you I apologize, but I am struggling to get into this hobby and I need help. THanks for whatever advice you all can give.

Piece,
~SHrizooma

1. True
2. True
3. Casings are crumbled up cakes with a layer of (different substrates of your choice) that act as a buffer to give the fruiting mycelium moisture.

I never used a incubator, just did my PF or mmgg or Hawke cakes, and put them in a closet with a hepa filter at 75-80 degrees. Cakes usually take around 30 days to fully colonize.
Personally, do a couple jars/cakes the PF tek way, just to get your feet wet. Then try a simple casing, because it is simple. Never be affraid to ask for help, we all need help in one way or another!!!!

1) True, but the incubator can also be used for the casings
while they recover from being crumbled.
2) A cake thrives in 95% humidity for it's lifetime. A casing
only needs this high humidity until pins form then it's dropped
into the 80's.
3) A casing is a little more trouble and time consuming but
produces better yields. Starting out watching several cakes
flush then experimenting by casing a couple of them seems
to be the way to go. Hope that helps. Peace
