When to case straw?
    #5380701 - 03/09/06 10:17 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've got some wbs colonized straw incubating right now. The top layer is almost completely colonized except for the stray piece of straw that is sticking out of the mixture here and there. I don't really see these pieces of straw getting colonized because they rise up and out of the other wbs/straw and their only contact point with myc is at their base.

Is this when I should be casing? I think the only way these outlying straw pieces are going to colonize is if i leave these things to incubate for another week or so...which doesn't seem very smart due to the contamination risk. Should I go ahead and apply the casing layer and drown those uncolonized straw pieces in h202 soaked verm?

i would case as soon as 20% of the valleys of the straw are colonized(lowest points of the top layer of straw). some people wait until 45%-90%. it's all a matter of opinion, experience, and personal preference.

Well, I went ahead and cased.  Thanks for the advice.  I think the rest of the uncolonized straw will colonize when the myc travels through the casing layer

You should let the straw fully colonize like ALL other substrates! This is very important don't get confused here guys. Those pieces sticking out can be snipped off with a scissors they are no biggie. The reason for letting the straw fully colonize should be obvious to any experienced grower or anyone familiar with any pinning strategy at all EVEN COLONIZATION OF THE CASING LAYER which in turn means a much more even pinset. Hmmm, nice info Hyphae!

Most of the uncolonized bits are around the edges of the container and the bits that stood out were pulled out so that nothing rises above the casing layer. Time will tell if the pinset is even or not, but it should be pretty even over 80% of the casing seeing as to how 80+% of the top layer is colonized.
