Camping Alone.

Anyone ever do it?
I used to go winter backpacking alone all the time.
I was just wondering what you guys thought about the safety issues with being alone in the wilderness.
I would never put myself into a situation where I would injure myself, but shit happens...
I have all the needed knowledge, as I have done this hundreds of times before, I just need outside opinions to show someone else that it is not a suicide run camping alone.

It's generally not recommended due to safety issues... however.. I have camped several times on my own with no problems. As have millions of other people.
It helps a lot that you have experience.. you definitely should still be very careful. But solo camping can be wonderfully divine.. nothing like some good old alone time in nature with number one. The biggest issues with people going alone is; 1: They are too inexperienced to handle 'the real world'.. and 2: They injure themselves and are unable to go for help.. that's the one you would be worried about. In that case it would help to have someone know where you are going, a nearby friend or family member.. and maybe let a ranger know you'll be going out there solo for X amount of time. Will you get cell phone reception out there? Probably not huh.. but that would just about eliminate that concern. This is assuming you'll be out 'in the middle of nowhere', where you wont be running into any people.
So yeah... just be smart and be careful. Don't break any legs or anything and don't get mauled by any giant bears and you'll be just fine.

Sounds like it would be interesting.. I've gone on some epic hikes alone, and camped a couple times alone - but the times that i camped alone were not very far from civilization.

I love solo outings. As a kid I always dreamed of being a "mountain man" like my grandfather. He had serious hay-fever as a teenager so ever year he would pack a bedroll, climb on his horse, and ride off into the mountains for a few months during hay season (once he got out of the valleys and away from the farms it was OK). Some years he would have company but most times it was solo. He told many tales of his adventures to me when I was a kid. As soon as I was old enough I started going on solo outings. Still to this day they are my favorite types. I've never once even thought about the safety issues involved, and I doubt my grandfather did either.
Grandpa was a badass!

And this is my favorite self-portrait taken during a solo outing...

like shroomism mentioned, the only thing you have to worry about really is injury and evacuation. I've gone backpacking solo many times, and I have to highly recommend it if you have the experience not to get yourself hurt, ie. safegaurd food from bears etc, dont poop near your water supply, common sense stuff.
There is something beautiful though, about being out in the wilderness alone, having no need to talk just in complete communion wiht nature. Its perfect at clearing the cobwebs left by society from your mind, and getting perspective on things you probably haven't even had time to think about before.

As long as you let some friends or family know your route or location, and your estimated timeframe, solo camping should be fine in most circumstance. If nobody knows where & when you've gone, there won't be anybody to sound the alarm if you're not back in reasonable time. It's all about knowing yourself and your limits, and maybe being a little more cautious when there is nobody els around.

yea like they said, let somone know your going. you could bring a phone too. Sounds like a shitty thing to bring on a camping trip, but its better than dying right?
I never camped alone, that seems like it would rock though. I mean.. taking hikes through the woods at night alone is freaky enough. Takes some balls.

I'm going solo this year and have no experience other than the survival skills I learned in da Marines and watching Discovery Channel. Thank god for the GPS cellphone and my Medical Kit. I'll have somethin for anything from a anxiety attack to snakebite to having to reset a broken arm/leg. Now I just need alittle something to help me run a 3 minute mile.

Yeah, it seems like confidence has a lot to do with how you may make out on a trip like that.. don't want to be too confident and not pack enough, but at the same time, confidence will really help you throughout your journey.
