I have never done wbs->hpoo, nor have I ever had a contam before.
Normally I use well composted hpoo and my own organic compost 50/50 and get reasonable growth and zero contams. I am not getting the ultimate yields that way, but I don't need to. I grow for fun and a few close friends!
Recently I tried colonizing some straight poo with a quart of colonized wbs. This is day 3 and I checked it for the first time today. I have never seen mycelium so dense - looks like "great stuff" foam insulation but white.
However I also found what I'm pretty sure is cobweb. The only reason I am not 100% sure is, I've never seen it firsthand before. I've been careful and had a good deal of good fortune and never had a contam before. The best pic my shoddy camera could muster doesn't show the detail I wish it did, so I'll try to describe what the pic below shows:
The growth seems to all be pointing in the same general direction outward, away from the center of the growth. It is not similar to the thick, white fingers that I normally see in my wbs jars; this stuff is made up of thinner strands. The strands are crisscrossed in the center of the mass but remain distinct and are not clumping up.
In the upper left corner of the pic is an inset closeup of the suspect growth. Another thing making me think this is probably cobweb is the way the growth seems to be enveloping the thicker, whiter, chunky-looking growth below it.
So of course my question is, is this indeed the dreaded cobweb as I suspect it is? I really don't see how it could be anything except a contam since it is markedly different than the other growth that I'm sure is mushie myc. But, having no firsthand experience to draw from, I wanted to ask before I pitch out my first contamed casing.
