Light dry malt is about $3 a pound at HOME BREW & WINE MAKING SUPPLY STORES.
Which, also carry dry dextrose & food grade calcium carbonate

Meh.. the sites might not be getting the malt in surplus like brewery stores, so maybe they're paying more. Plus, like any business.. they're out to make a profit, not to save people money.

thats true to some extent, but $10 for 8oz, they are not only making profit, but lots of it. i finally found a good site, not a cheap as the stores agar mentioned, but way cheaper then the other sites ive seen. check it out everyone. http://www.homebrewery.com/beer/beer-extracts-thb-dry.shtml
by the way, ive herd that the lightest malt is the best you can use for a malt/water mix for culturing, or making agar, or just the use of malt in general. is light really better the dark? i would asume its the other way around like wheat is always better then white in terms of nutrition, same goes for rice and rice flower.

I did a quick search and found a pound of light dry malt (make sure it's light) for 4 dollars. Are you doing a malt/dextrose mix? Dextrose should run about the same price. Get a pound of each and it will last a LONG time.

Well, no worries, I'm sure it will produce... however, you should consider dextrose. Agar recommends it (which is always a good thing), the idea being that there's a broader nutrient range. Beyond that, light malt tends to produce sediment, and cutting it with a sugar like dextrose can help keep the solution clear. The ratio is the same, 1/2Tbs of each to a cup of water.
