I think I found some pan subbs...

Today I discovered, as I had hoped, that the rain brought many mushrooms into being. I have found several that appear to be subbs, with the characteristic ring on the caps, which were just under 1 inch in diameter, with free brown gills and a light brown, slightly shiny stalk. They were all growing in grass close to horse manure, under or near olive trees... I understand this has been discussed frequently, but what are the major telltale signs that distinguish subbs from panaeolina? I will take pictures soon...

Some of the samples seem to have a straight, smooth, lighter stalk, while others have a slightly more gnarled feel and look. There are no other major differences, however...

sounds like panaeolina... although the print being black is odd. take a look at this spore print comparison chart and verify that your print is indeed jet black as this.

if your for sure that the print is black, it could still be something else. pictures would be the best help, but so far it sounds like panaeolina. tell me something, do the stems appear to be spiraling down? look closely. either way stay safe, i hope we get some pix up here.

But luckaly panaeolina foenisecii is not toxic so I wouldn't worry too much. When I had just a twinkle of mushroom knowlege I found a few foenisecii growing in a lawn in napa, I recognized the ring zone around the cap but the stems were too small and didn't bruse so i tossed um.

Nice pictures shroomieofdoomie... I have never before seen fresh mushrooms in a briefcase... Did you print the Panaeolina? They are about three or four times larger than what I typically encounter. pretty neat. georgem

Don't most bruise at the base of the stem? I admit I've never pic'd any pans but all the hay makers mushrooms i've seen have small skinny stems exept for the ones in that pic very interesting.

some bruise at the base of the stems, near or on the mycelial fluff... the psilocybin contents in subbs vary from moderate to low, and most, sadly have low amounts of alkaloidal contents. i believe it has to do with the nitrogen content of the substrate.

There is something funky in this thread. The subbalteatus in the brief case is a beautiful picture. Were those found in the bay area? They are quite a bit healthier looking then the ones I find around here. Also what substrate did you finds those in?

bay area, check angryshroom's gallery for tons of picture from the same patch. coincidentaly we knew of the same one. they grew on a 100 foot long, 20 foot tall, and 30 foot wide pile of shit and hay.
wasnt a briefcase. old camera case. much smaller.
