I have a quesiton about rust. I used a mason jar lid to sit cake down on. Well the side of the lid is starting to rust, and underneath (onto the perlite). It has spread a little onto the perlite around it, but i dont see any on the cake, and there is no contam's on the cake, and no discoloration. Can the myc. break down the rust and absorb it? Should i throw it out? After the first flush should i pull the cake up and see if any rust was touching the botom to make sure first flush is "usable"? ANy input would help, thank u

I wouldnt think so if you had your Tetanus shot. I would try and figure out something else that you could place the cake on. some thing plastic they make plastic jar lids that you could buy and have them be your fruiting lids or somthing.

It's harmless to the mushrooms and to you if eaten. Just don't cut your finger on the rusty lid. Lockjaw sucks. RR

plastic jar lids make perfect fruiting supports as they do not rust (and are therefore infinitely reusable), are exactly the right size for cakes, they create a little well you can fill with wet verm for a double-ended tek and are extremely easy to clean once finished.

but can it make the mushroom's toxic? Due to the rust, or does it not break down rust and absorb it?

Iron Oxide(rust) is found in large proportions in our blood. Rust is not toxic(if eaten) unless en masse. You would have to eat quite a bit to get really sick.
If your question is 'Do mushrooms break down Iron Oxide into a toxic substance?' I really don't know. What I can tell you is that all the metal lids of jars eventually rust. That means more than likely, people who have been growing for a long time have used rusty lids at one time or another. I have never heard of someone dying or becoming any more sick than usual from eating mushrooms that came in contact with rusty lids.
It may be worth mentioning that Iron Oxide is EXTREMELY STABLE from a chemical point of view. So it would take a generous amount of energy to seperate it or bind it to new chemical compounds. The most that would probably happen is some would 'get mixed in' with your mushrooms. If that is the case, their is nothing to worry about.
Feel free to search the forums for any reports of this happening: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php?Cat=0
Their may be some, I dunno cause I'm not concerned with it.
