The Racoon's Mini/Bio/Reactor

The Racoon tells me the Mini/Bio/Reactor method might not be for beginners;simply because you don't need bulk substrate, or have not got to casings, yet.

But, you may not be a beginner forever. So -- FYI :

If you want to compost a LOT of your own bulk substrate, without a big smelly outdoor bug infested pile. It can be done in the garage, or on the patio, or back porch -- low/tec, simple, cheaply, and built by anybody - including you sweet females. No wizardry, tough work or pitchfork piles involved.

All it requires is two big plastic garbage cans with lids (any size that fit inside each other with some air space between the two will work (suggest a 20 gal - inside a 32 gal -or- 32 gal inside a 40), a drill, a bit (1/2 to 1 inch - like they drill through hollow wooden doors with. They cost about $4 @ Ace - True Value or any hardware store), some fiberglass screen door material (cheap @ any hardware store), and a brick (or 2 -- or -- any inert spacer).

Simply drill a pattern of 15 - 20 holes in the bottom of the smaller can, then drill a series of holes - a few inchs apart - all around the smaller can in rings, with about 3 - 6 inch ring spacing, up to within a few inchs of its top.

Line the bottom & sides of the smaller can with the screen, place the bricks (or any inert spacer) in the bottom of the larger can, set the smaller can inside the larger can - on top the brick(s) to allow air circulation & drainage at the bottom. Bingo - your done.

Fill the inner can with whatever your composting & compost. Note, while working - if your compost material is really wet - this system will generate excess leachant fluid in the bottom of the larger can. If you let it build up - it can smell bad. Big boys can -Tip - the thing to pour it out.

Or, If you want to get snazzy, simply install a low cost ($3) plastic outdoor faucet - a few inchs above the bottom of the larger can. You already have the bit & these faucets just screw togather with a washer backing inside, to hold it in place. Simply tighten it up with a wrench.

If you can acquire a larger can - with little wheels on the bottom? It makes your Mini/Bio/Reactor mobile. This system has some variables, dependent on your climate, the material you compost, the amount of fluid you add, temp & humidity. If you want - you can insulate the inner can by filling the side space between it & the outer can with loose stacked dry leaves. You can usualy generate a LOT of quality mushroom compost in 3 to 6 weeks.
