My question although it didn't hit well on search, was answered once it was posted and related threads came up.
Thanks to all who answered.

PS-I do this (rename them and edit to show they're answered) with my threads that have appeared before so that they can die away as to not clog up the boards with frivolous duplicates of already answered questions.

I always just stacked my half pint jars directly on top of each other.
If you want something more secure you can use anything that is on hand really... a piece of cardboard will work.
I can only assume your worried that by placing the second layer of jars on top of the others it will obstruct the gas exchange by covering the holes in the lid?
You don't really have to worry about this to much. In fact I've found the best way to get good gas exchange with PF style jars is to just loosen off the lids of the jars a quarter turn or so....the dry verm layer is your filter against contams.

I am not doing Pf first off. I am inoculating 48 Pint jars of Rye and WBS, 24 of each. 6 different sub-strains will be used in the amount of 8 jars each. I will then be bulk substrating it to Tenn-stud, and then casing.
But yea, my concern was about gas exchange and as you don't use dry verm in rye/wbs jars, that was where I was coming from.

As for the PF and the verm layer:
I am finding that as the mycelium is colonizing the cake, it shrinks. This is tending to let the vermiculite layer fall down the sides and stick to the jar. It obstructs my view of the pretty white

My mistake, I dunno why but I just assumed Pf for some reason. Your game plan sounds great tho, good way to get started. It will be rewarding in the end.
But basically what I said still holds true. Besides lossening the lids (don't do that) that's what your handy dandy filter lids are for.
The jars stacked on top of each other wont really make any kind of seal that will make a difference.
Scrool down to the bottom of this page. There is a list of related threads. Your question is already answered in the second link. Good luck on the rest of your project.
