E-Z Re-useable filtered jar lid pictorial

Hello, all. I was making some lids tonight and figured, hell, I have a digicam, I might as well make a pictorial on it in case anyone is interested.
Okay. So, you need plastic lids. Like these:
Then, you drill two holes in each lid, one bigger (for the filter) and one smaller (for the injection port). MAKE SURE you sand down the top AND underside of the injection port hole--you need a rough surface area so the silicone will not pull off when you're sticking a syringe needle through it--and also sand the top of the lid around the filter hole so your tyvek will have a good anchor on the lid. So it should look like this after you've drilled and sanded:
Now, you need some gasket maker silicone sealant. There are several different RTV Permatex brands out there. I think nearly all of them will stand up to PC'ing temps, it should say on the back. I used this one, as it was teh cheep --I think like 4 or 5 bucks for a tube:
Do the injection port silicone blob first. I don't use the nozzle included with the gasket maker, I just go straight from the tube. Give the top of the lid a little kiss of silicone, swirl it around a bit so you have a millimeter or two of spreaded silicone that will adhere to the sanded surface around the injection port hole, pull the tube away, and you should have a little blob that looks like this in profile: Then, you'll most likely have a bit of silicone poking through the injection port hole on the underside. Give that a little kiss of silicone, spread it around in the same way as before, pull the tube away and smooth out any of that "chocolate chip" curl the silicone may have.
Then, I like to use a popsicle stick or something to spread the silicone with for the filter sealing. Make a ring of silicone a millimeter or two outside the filter hole, so that the silicone won't blob over when you press the tyvek to it. It should look like this:
Then, take a square of tyvek that's clearly larger than the filter hole, hold one corner of that tyvek square against the lid where there is no silicone, then, with another finger, tamp down on the tyvek square in a circle to stick it to the silicone (you don't need to do this with much pressure, just so they glob together; the silicone will harden later and you won't have a problem).
So, your filtered lid should look like this from the underside (NO silicone blobbing over and constricting the filter area ):
From the top, it will look like this:
Let it dry for 18 or 24 hours, take an Exacto knife or something similar, trim off the excess tyvek that's not adhered to the silicone, and you're good to go.

Any stores that sell canning supplies should have them. Though, grocery stores that sell jars around here don't always have plastic lids, and Walmart for some reason doesn't carry them either. I guess you just have to look around a bit.
Get stoned on your day off and go re-con likely targets.

It's that same self-healing property, yeah. I'm sort of DIY so I need a liquid silicone to fit my irregular drilled holes. And, yes, plastic lids can be difficult to acquire in some areas. You can always look online, of course. But if you're going to do that, you'd be better off buying several packs of them just to save on shipping and the expensive prices I've seen for plastic lids online.

very cool write up
A few questions. How many trips do those lids last through the PC.
And could you use the microfilter disk that last forever.....

dude what do you think the box with 96 lids looks like 10 buck is cheap !! and there are 28 bucks a box thats like 39 cents a lid delivered just look at how hard some of the mushroom site would rip you for the same thing 96 lids at sporeworks is 96 bucks
BTY i make my lid like that too but i by filter disks cut them up and glue them on and don't put the needle site because i do g2g but like you said you HAVE to rough up the top of the lid for the glue and i use the RED its kinda caustic its bonds with the plastic NOTE don't get the Black it will peel right off with no force

I used rubber stoppers just like those anarchist. And I found packets of short latex tubing to be stuffed with polyfil and act as filter hoses on the lids. 96 stoppers and 100 tubes is $10 + $6 shipping, so it gives you enough to make nearly 100 filter lids.
I made like 1-2 dozen of them last weekend, and it was actually really cool how well they worked. With a little bit of manipulation, the stoppers and tubs could be affixed into the lids extremely tightly, with no need of silicone. I'd take a picture, but my camera is shit and goes through batteries like an addict.

Shyeah... shipping is a bitch. I've been looking for a magnet for a homemade stir plate. I checked out a couple sites recommended by people on here and they both had minimum $7 shipping. The magnets I wanted only costed like $3. That's just insane! $10 for a $3 magnet, thanks to the $7 shipping! Bagh..

Cough.....uhhhhhhh
Has anyone noted that the plastic Kerr/Ball lids are:
STORAGE LIDS, not meant for canning.
If anyone wonders WHY.
They generally will not form a VACUUM SEAL.
I say generally, because if you screw them on SUPER TIGHT, they might sometimes.
But, when they are that TIGHT.
They are NEARLY impossible to unscrew.
Even screwed on TIGHT, they often will LEAK fluids. (just fill a jar with water, screw on a lid & lay it sideways over-night).
How one RESOLVES this issue is to use rubber gasket rings.
Good luck finding ones that will fit.

Hum all i use is those plastic lids i never have any problems with them once i got the feel for them. when you load them in the cooker you leave the lid just a little loose and then snug up when unloading from cooker (at this point the jars are still venting steam so thay have positive presser) and then after inoculating i close real tite. one other note is to let the presser off real real slow,at 250F those lids are a bit soft and you can blow them of if you just pull the weight of and let it drop all the way down. also if you put the lids on supper tite before cooking thay are a bitch to get off when cool so like i said keep it just a hair loose

why keep them loose? you have a air filter (airflow) and injection site. you wont need to take the lids off until theyre fully colonized, unless your doing g2g, cloning, or other shit like that.
sorry if i dont know what im talking about. i have never used plastic lids before.

I am familiar with this lids. Look on the box and it will say : "Not intended for food processing"
Simply not tough enough and will warp, which will make them worse with what AGAR has stated.

Some have trouble with plastic lids? The only problem I've encountered has been the injection port getting pulled off by the syringe.
Well, do what works for you, then.

I have been using plastic lids for years and haven't had any problems with them... contam wise, sealing wise or melting wise.
and I haven't use the gaskets that agar showed you... I have seen the gaskets in a few stores...but they are far and few between.
I use the plastic lid with an injection port and a small round bandaid or some micropore tape over the other hole.

I have used then for years, also.
But, when I began using them.
When I did an LC in a few.
I noticed when you tipped the jar. To aspirate some LC.
A few leaked moisture around the cap bottom.
So, I made the effort to find/buy the rubber gaskets.
Which resolved any ever leaking moisture.
It could be that some of the OLDER mason jars (I have) threads are not what up to todays spec's.
I love the plastic lids.
Because they don't RUST & look nice.
I just take the EXTRA ADDED PRECAUTION, of using rubber ring gaskets with them. Because, a few times, when an LC was tipped sideways, the lid leaked some moisture.
I just insured that NEVER happens - again. By also using the rubber gaskets.
When used on wbs/grain spawn jars. I believe the tyvek UNDER the lid, serves like a thin gasket. Because, I have never had a problem, using them - that way.

I've used plastic lids for years and have occasionally noticed the light liquid seepage with LC as well.
OTOH, I use the same tek outlined above where the lids are tightened post PCing and 999 times out of 1000 there is no seepage but the lids are physically impossible to remove without running very hot water over them.

If you can find the rubber gaskets (hard to do), that will resolve the problem of opening the tough nuts, as well.

Nice pictorial! A good tip, silicone is totally water resistant. Take that popsicle stick and dip it in water, no more sticky sticky.
