There isn't much of anything to be found here this time of year.. not until spring.
I've lived and picked stuff here for a long time.
The so called "first state".

I live right on the top of the state too. It's like I practically live in 4 states. If you look at the map, I can easily hop over to Maryland in a 5 min drive, go to PA in a 10 min drive, Jersey in a 15 min drive

So eris.. what mushrooms do you personally focus on when out and about? If I may inquire... I'll refrain from asking if the area is good for actives (don't want to bring up a depressing topic). Is there a culture of hunting mushrooms in that area. In Kansas just about everyone knows of morels and in season you are likely to encounter stiff competition in the woods. You can run into normal boring midwesterners to the totally rag tag back woods eccentric redneck mystic beer pirates who upon being discovered will likely bum your cigarettes and use strange colloquialisms not common outside their respective counties. Virtually no one looks for actives or chanterelles save the myco-geeks and we are few and far between... most of them are getting old. At the mycologicical society meetings there is a lady who is pretty darn close to the century mark... she still goes on forays and is excellent at identification. heehee anyway... georgem

The people around here seem to have little or no knowledge of mushrooms in general. As far as everyone that I've tried to talk to about the subject. Everyone that I've showed morels to gave me a look like !? They have no idea what morels even are, and refuse to try them because of the way they look Furthermore they discredit my experience and tell me things like "mushrooms picked outside are dangerous for you", or "you're gonna get yourself poisoned". They just don't understand and seem to be pretty close minded on the subject.
As far as I know there are no mycology societies in my state either. I haven't searched for one in a long time, but I remember that when I did, it came up with nothing.
I have never in over 10 years ran into another mushroom hunter while I was out in the fields/woods. I have run into some people who look suspicious of my actions.. When I tell them that I'm looking for mushrooms, they get a confused sort of look about them.
I was even talking to these guys that I was hanging out with.. they were talking about cubes, and it was so sad to hear all of the false information that they strongly believed in. It was way out there and far from the truth. Of course they wouldn't listen to what i had to say. They don't understand that i do happen to know what I'm talking about!
I mainly seek out edibles these days. Around here there is such a broad range of habitats. My area is flat and has endless woodlands with a diverse range of tree species. There are plenty of farms and pastures nearby. There are also plenty of man made areas that certain mushrooms prefer. if I want higher elevation, which can be an advantage when my flat land is dry.. i can drive up to PA. Basically I feel that any kind of mushroom is worth my attention. I love to try and identify everything and anything.. regardless of its possible edibility. it's just fun all together. I don't have anyone else that I can go hunting with. My gf will go with me, but she can slow me down at times.. 99% of the time I go out there, it's just me. Miles out in the middle of nowhere. It's cool that she at least shows some interest in it.

never been to US but you seem to be far enough north for liberty caps. can only go on my experience picking in the UK ...look in the autumn (fall - american translation!) after at least two weeks of heavy rain but before hard frost find some relatively high up pastures - kind of place with gorse, heather, thistles, sedge grass & bracken ferns etc (do you call them moors in america?)- must have been grazed for a long time by sheep, deer or horses - in years picking in UK I've never found substantial amounts in fields with cows - maybe cause they trample up the ground too much - if you don't see signs of other mushrooms then you probably wont find psilocybes - the drier the weather the higher you'll might need to go - precipitation & dew increases the chance of fruiting - so maybe PA is your best bet? look on slopes with slight inclines & look around bases of sedge and thistles ( but not in totally waterlogged ground where sedge sometimes grows, just nice and damp! )the kind of mushrooms that I usually spot before liberty caps in the same environment are earth tongues (yellow antler - shaped thingies) psilocybe papiloniaceous/campanulatus/sphinctrinus and stropharia semiglobata - I've never seen liberty caps grow in the same fields as fairy ring mushrooms or on fields with lots of moss & clovers- so I reckon if you see them you're in the wrong place? in UK 200 miles can make all the difference - in the northwest and wales you can fill up bin liner bags in good times - but down in the south east where I live you get far fewer and the season starts a good month later - its all down to that heavy rain that libs love - - - good luck!!!

I used to think they should be able to be found in the northeast.. but in all the years, I never came across any.. Looked in the habitats you'd expect liberty caps to be in.. never found a single one. I figured they are probably just not around here. the temperature seems similar to the actual places that they occur in too. gave up on looking for those a long time ago.

Sorry, but read the forum rules at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2263556.
The hunting and ID forum is not for finding hunting partners, or for requesting or revealing specific mushroom locations.
If you find anything, we will be happy to help you figure out what it is. Also check out the links in Joust's signature; you'll find good information on which species like to grow in which habitats in your state.

I also hail from the great tiny wonder that is Delaware. Was out shrooming today, decided to come back home and refresh my research to be safe. This thread came up from googling DE mushrooms, and here I am posting, hoping for someone to respond as it seems to be a dead thread. I just need to know what is available this time of year and where should I gravitate to for the purpose of searching? Thanks in advance.
