I buy CD's all the time. I just rip them to my computer then upload them to my ipod. I still believe in paying for my music and supporting my bands.
There's about 20 gigs of music that I downloaded from limewire, the rest I have paid for.

Nope, the reason I do it is because it's free music and I have no money. It's a crime, but I don't feel bad doing it.

ah.... looking out for the 1.
Not only is it extremely selfish, it is hypocritical, especially the way I have personally witnessed every single one of you drone on about government insensitivities and oversights.
would you feel bad stealing alex gray prints? would you feel bad stealing books?
I dont see why this aspect of art is any different in regards to your guilt.

I wouldn't but more than 1% of the music I dw anyway. And even if I could buy it, most of that 1% is out of print or is so rare I don't think they even have cds.
And anyway, who are you to give me or anyone any moral talk at all? I already have a father, thanks.

i've got about 300gb, spread out between two external drives, my laptop, and an old pentium box at my house.
if i got together the music that is on the servers at work (that i don't already have) plus whatever else is on my home-network (that i don't already have), i'd probably have about 400 gb.

Of course it's selfish. Stealing is always selfish, unless the stff you're stealing is being given to someone else.
I don't see why I should feel bad anyways. I'm not actually stealing money from the artists or record labels anyways. It's not as if I would pay for this music even if I decided not to download it. I don't see why I should have to justify myself; I know it's a crime and is wrong, but I do it anyways.

Explain to me how I am stealing money.
There is a huge difference between stealing money and depriving them of money they would not have received in the first place.
That's why it is tried in the courts as a copyright matter, and not theft.

Exactly. Another point: Is it ethical then to donwload music that was recorded by someone that is already dead?
Because that's mostly the thing in my case; I'm not giving a cent to, for example, Jimi Hendrix's father, who sent him to live in the streets but when his son became famous and rich and died, oh surprise! he started worrying about his son's music and of course earning money out of it.
The same goes for most bands I like. I'm not paying for a cd if the artist is not receiving something out of it-period. I don't need the material cd to hear the music, so why should I pay for it? I'll only pay if the artist gets some of my money.

what i usually do is download an album by a band who's cd i would have never bought otherwise and then if i'll like it enough, and i want more, i'll buy one of their cd's. then i'll continue the 50/50 ratio with that band, if possible. That does not apply to millionare artists or artists that have died. For instance i just downloaded a bunch of jimi hendrix and johnny cash albums, but only one wilco album, so that i can see if i like wilco or not.
I believe this is somewhat fair and in a way perhaps it's good for the more underground bands whose cd's i wouldn't buy based on reviews alone. And of course, everyone knows that most bands get the majority of their money from touring, but still, if you don't support your favorite bands by buying a cd from time to time, then you are a shmuck.

87.5gb
I mostly stopped buying albums three or four years ago. I already have over 400 cds.. no way I am carrying all those around.
Only time I buy a cd these days is if it's a local/underground band I catch at a show I really like.. or if I want the album art and lyrics to a certain CD.

I dont see how you can say that it is money they arent making.
you are listening to the album right?
what kind of mentality is that? I wont pay 15 bucks for it, but I will steal it!
of course you arent taking tangible dollars from their pocket and putting it in yours, but you are depriving them of funds they would otherwise get.
imagine how many people you have burned cd's for, which now have all those artist's songs for free?
copyright infringement is an alternate term for stealing, but it deals with concepts, things which arent tangible. its like the difference between libel and slander.
for the few of you that actually do have jobs, how would feel if someone used your services, or took your craft, enjoyed it thoroughly, and decided they werent going to pay you?
The point isnt whether or not you "would have" bought it. Artists and labels provide a service, as well as a tangible form of entertainment.... that is their livelyhood. When you are directly enjoying, or using their entertainment, you owe them money.
You cant walk into a concert, listen to the whole thing and say.... well, I wouldnt have paid to get in anyway, but thanks for the good time.... and skirt off.

15 dollars for me= 15 dollars... 15 dollars for them = .000000000000000000000000015 dollars

what does that matter? how is that a proper justification?
you know how much money it takes to get an album out?
you know how much money the artists get from that album?
do you know how much money it costs to keep a tour going?
add up all those .00000000015$ over millions of people like yourself that use that same justification and it equals big bucks.
just because an artist is dead doesnt mean that it is public domain, or has no worth. If you made an invention which generated millions of dollars, wouldnt you want your family to reap the benefits long after you are gone?
sure, on a personal level, DLing an album is pretty harmless, but you need to look at the whole that you are part of. Its like pollution or littering, understand that your omission of crime not only lessens the overall problem (by a very little bit) but it can also deter people from doing it whom are in your presence.
